Preserving Southwest Harbor History
The purchase of the Manset Meetinghouse and the attached Gleaner’s Hall has given the Southwest Harbor Historical Society the space to care for our growing collection, including pieces like this ice saw, emblematic of local ice harvesting history.
Ice from Manset ponds helped preserve fish catches, and the ice industry provided work for many local men. “Cakes” of ice were slid quite a distance to the shore on temporary sluiceways. Local historian Ralph Stanley said ice cakes could get going up to 60 mph and would have to be slowed down before reaching the Stanley Fisheries Ice House on the shore. When a fresh catch came in, cakes were put through a crusher at the wharf. Once the fish was processed they were packed in barrels with the ice for shipping.
