Gateway to History
Floods, freshets, and fires are well represented in collections at the Chamberlain/Whitney House, as they deeply changed people’s lives. Many items document life on the Union River and in its associated lumbering, shipbuilding, and milling. Others have roots beyond Ellsworth to Mount Desert Island and the rural towns of Hancock County.
Two glass-plate-negative collections provide visual documentation. This image is in our postcard collection.
When the Old Jail re-opens, exhibits will emphasize the stories of incarcerated inmates and jailers who raised families in the connected home.
