A Collector

At first on his own, later with help from peers and friends, Richard Paine bought and sold cars, sometimes buying several of one kind, then letting some go, only to be replaced by objects of his next great interest. He not only collected great cars, he collected relevant, arcane, enriching tidbits of knowledge that helped make him one of the world’s great collectors. The end result has inspired every car guy who’s ever visited the Seal Cove Auto Museum.

A Museum

Though happy to have the growing collection be his private domain, Richard Paine gradually enjoyed other people’s enjoyment of his treasures. He formed the nonprofit Seal Cove Auto Museum to provide a place to keep and display his extraordinary collection.

Our world-class collection of early Brass Era cars is housed in a metal building set back from the road in Seal Cove, a village of Tremont. The building also houses a library of automotive books and magazines, and a restoration shop where visitors can observe the work of the museum's expert mechanics.

Seal Cove Auto Today

We share stories about invention and innovation, art, design, women’s rights, and social and economic changes that can be traced through more than 60 early motor vehicles. Our collection features some of the earliest automobiles and motorcycles, as well as clothing and accessories, all from 1895 through the early 1920s. Antique auto enthusiasts, history buffs, as well as anyone who simply loves stories or wants to experience something entirely different, will delight in this unique collection.
