Few research facilities can boast such gracious accommodations. Two architecturally noted

library boasts state-of-the-art technology for the storage and protection of rare documents.
The interior has also been completely restored. Gold leaf and crystal chandeliers sparkle.
Polished floors, glazed bookcases, fresh paint in hues of peach and cream, and the elegant
sweep of grand white columns graciously welcome visitors and researchers. Long wooden
worktables equipped with hookups for computers, comfortable Windsor chairs, and
attentive librarians all contribute to creating a researcher's paradise.

Visiting the Library
The Phillips Library is located in Plummer Hall on the campus of the Peabody Essex Museum
in downtown Salem, Massachusetts. Plummer Hall is on Essex Street located next to the
Salem Visitors Center and Armory Park.
Visitors to the Library must check in with the Security Guard before entering the library.
After paying the daily stipend, visitors are required to leave coats, briefcases, backpacks,
handbags, and pens in the free lockers provided to library patrons. Laptop computers,
notebooks, and pencils may be brought into the Reading Room. Cell phones and pagers
must be turned off in the Library. No cameras (or cell phones with cameras) are allowed in
the Library; they must be placed in the lockers before entering the Library.
All researchers must register with the Librarian upon entering the Library every time they
visit the Library. Each patron must fill out a registration form once a year. Since the Phillips
Library is a research facility dedicated to making primary materials available for research,
as well as protecting them for future generations, specific rules and procedures are

necessary and must be followed by all patrons. At the time of registration a staff member
will provide orientation to the layout of the Reading Room and instruct patrons how to use
the Library's catalog and finding aids. Specific procedures to request Library materials will
also be discussed.
Photocopy requests must be approved by the Librarian. When the physical condition of the
item makes it possible, photocopies will be made by the library staff; patrons are not
allowed to make any photocopies. A fee of $.50 per printed page or $1.00 per manuscript
page will be charged for each copy. There will be at least a 48 hour turnaround time for
photocopy requests to be processed. Librarians may be able to fill requests sooner, but
patrons may expect a delay of 2 - 3 work days to have photocopying request to be fulfilled.
Patrons must provide contact information for the librarians to process the photocopies. A
$5.00 handling fee will be charged for up to 30 copies; $7.50 will be added to the cost for
copy requests above 30 items. Copies from microfilm can be made by the library patron at
the microfilm copier at $.50 per page.
Special arrangements can also be made to have photographs created of certain library
materials; the museum's photography department will process this request. Please ask the
Librarian for the appropriate pricing information and photograph-request forms.

Subject: Access Query
I am interested in accessing archival manuscripts in the Dorr Family Papers, John M. Ward Papers, and the
William Gray Papers.
I have contacted you previously but have been sidetracked by an abundance of Ward Family resources at the
Massachusetts Historical Society. My efforts are directed at writing a life of George Bucknam Dorr (1853-1944),
founder of Acadia National Park.
In trying to find a time when my library is closed and yours is open, I wonder if you could tell me whether December
23rd or December 30th are days when your collections and staff are available to assist me with my research.
Thank you.

Dear Ms. Karlberg,
On February 24, 2003 you emailed me regarding by interest in Mss 46 and 115 providing me with a sense of the size of

Hazen Dorr (Mary Ward Dorr) and her ancestry. It is part of my research for a biography of George Bucknam Dorr (1853-

I have recently discovered that you also possess the Dorr Family Papers (1794-1865); could you give me some sense of

I'm trying to arrange my schedule for February to travel to Phillips Library to access these resources. Is there a finding aid

Ward and Gray Family Papers
I am engaged in preparing a biography of George Bucknam Dorr (1853-1944), founder and first
Superintendent of Acadia National Park (1916-1944).
Mr. Dorr is the son of Mary Ward Dorr (wife of Charles Hazen Dorr) a member of the Ward and Gray families
that were so important during the era of Salem shipping.
The National Archives contains a letter dated 17 December 1946 from Salem Maritime National Historic Site
Superintendent Edwin W. Small drirected to the NPS Regional Director (Region One) that details some
manuscripts held by the Essex Institute relative to the Ward and Gray families:
William Gray and William Gray Jr. Letters (1804-1852),
John Ward, Receipts, (1821-1822)
Joshua Ward, Bills, Invoices, Letters, etc. (1858-1839)
Miles Ward, Commercial (1699-1819)
Ward Family, Commercial (1709-1832).
Superintendent Small asked whether Dorr/Ward/Gray family papers might be donated by Acadia National
Park to his Institute; a letter from NPS Assistant Director Hillery Tolson (12/19/46) also indicated interest in
such a transferral. I have uncovered no documentation that such a donation actually transpired.
Before I plan a visit to your facility, could you determine whether this information is accurate and whether
there might be additional Ward and Gray family manuscipts in your possession, especially those that may
have been secured since this memo was written more than fifty years ago.
I appreciate the professional courtesy involved in handling this request.

can on the areas in the National Park System. Mr. George B. Dorr,
over a period of many years, was active in the establishment of
Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Maine, and became its first
superintendent. He was also interested in Salem Maritime National
Historic Site, Salem, Massachusetts, especially because of ancestral
associations.
No shall appreciate any references that you may suggest as to
possible sources of information covering Mr. Dorr's interest and

Reference is made to the memorandum of December 11 from Acting Regional
Director Cox quoting a paragraph from Superintendent Hadley's memorandum of
December 4 concerning historical material relative to Salem from former Super-

The farilies of Gray and Ward were both important during the brilliant
era of Salem shipping and if letters and documents left by Mr. Dorr touch on
their business enterprises during this period or even only provide information
about their family life and activities, we are sure they would be of consider-
able interest and value here in Salem.

It is our thought that former Superintendent Dorr's papers may possibly
contain desirable additions and supplements to the above collections. If this
is the case, they are for certain well worth further examination.
In this connection we would be interested to know whether it is intended
to retain all of former Superintendent Dorr's papers at Acadia National Park
or whether the pertinent family papers might be available for deposit here at
Salem.

If for the seantime the capers are to be kept intact at Acadia, we would
be very glad of the opportunity to examine them sometime during the course of
the next travel season when it may be possible as it is not now for us to motor
down that way.
Some further indication 38 to the quantity of the papers relating to the
Salem families and the way in which the papers are now preserved or stored
would be helpful.

Bowditch questions
From "Elizabeth Eustis"
To
Date Thu, 19 Mar 2009 15:59:48 -0400
Dear Ronald Epp:
My husband Fred Eustis (Ernest Bowditch's grandson via his daughter Elizabeth) and I have intended to respond
to your query for some time. We have been distracted and travelling, but I hope it is not too late to be of some
assistance.
Ernest Bowditch wrote his memoirs, which exist in typescript at the library of the Peabody Essex Museum in
Salem. We have a copy in Milton and there are probably additional copies with other family members. They are
informative, opinionated, and entertaining. I can't remember if Dorr turns up in them and at the moment I am
writing from Florida. If you remind me to check them after March 25th, I will try to respond promptly!
The
best published entry on Ernest Bowditch that I know is by Kara Hamley O'Donnell in Pioneers of American
Landscape Design, Charles Birnbaum ed. She also wrote a Master's thesis at Cornell on Ernest Bowditch, giving
lots of background and focusing primarily on his public parks system in Cleveland.
Fred believes that Henry Intersoll Bowditch was probably the uncle of Ernest.
He is unaware of any scrapbooks or family collections containing an image of Mr. Dorr.
Ernest W. Bowditch changed his name (from William Ernestus?) while he was in college.
Fred thinks that Margaret Swann was from Annapolis, Maryland.
We are unaware of any Dorr involvement in Bowditch's purchases of land at Isle au Haut. As a landscape
architect/engineer he travelled between Boston and Mount Desert Island, stopping in at Isle au Haut out of
curiosity at first. His memoirs state the names of the friends with whom he started a club there-Fred doesn't
recall an involvement by Dorr, but again we could check. We have the old registers of the Point Lookout Club.
Perhaps Dorr's name would turn up there?
Fred says that someone approached Ernest and Margaret Bowditch about getting involved in the formation of
the national park that later became Acadia-but he doesn't have any particular reason to believe that this was
Dorr. This could be checked.
I think the real question is what is in the memoirs. Have you seen them?
Our telephone number in Milton is 617 333 0915. You now have my email address. Let's pursue any lingering
questions after March 25th.
Yours sincerely,
Libby Eustis

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES
MILES WARD (1673/4-1764), a Salem joiner and chairmaker, was born in
Salem, the second son of Joshua (1641-1680) and Hannah (Flint) Ward. He married
Sarah Massey, the daughter of John and Sarah (Wells) Massey, by whom he had all five
of his children. After Sarah's death in 1728, Miles married Sarah Ropes, the daughter of
William and Sarah (Ingersoll) Ropes.
MILES WARD (1704-1792), a Salem joiner and shipping merchant, was born in
Salem, the second son of Miles and Sarah (Massey) Ward. His first wife was Elizabeth
Webb, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Phippen) Webb. They had eight children.
After Elizabeth's death in 1737, Miles married Hannah (Derby) Hathorne, the widow of
Benjamin Hathorne, and they also had eight children.
Following in his father's footsteps, Miles began work as a joiner in Salem in the
1720s. However, by 1740, Miles had entered shipping and fishing. He engaged in trade
to the West Indies and Europe. Between the 1760s and the 1770s, Miles owned at least
five ships and one fishing vessel.
Upon Miles's death in 1792, he left an insolvent estate, administered by his son
Joshua.
JOSHUA WARD (1752-1825) was the son of Miles (1704-1792) and Hannah
(Derby) Hathorne Ward. A prosperous Salem shipping merchant, Joshua began his
career as partial owner of many privateers during the Revolutionary War. By 1782, his
ships had begun trading tobacco, rum, and grains with ports in the West Indies and
Europe. Ward's vessels continued to sail mainly to these ports and also to Manila and
Africa. While Ward was not primarily known as a slave trader, his activities did include
some slave trading. Several of his vessels also participated in fishing voyages.
In 1784, Joshua formed a partnership with his nephew Nathan Ward. Acting as
an agent for their company in Petersburg, Virginia, Nathan oversaw the purchase,
loading, and sale of cargo for ships owned by Joshua. Although the partnership dissolved
in 1787, Nathan continued to oversee the purchase and loading of cargo for Joshua until
Nathan's death, circa 1792. In 1791, Joshua built a distillery and began exporting New
England rum to merchant houses in New York and Europe. He continued to own ships
and consign cargo on other vessels until the early 1800s.
Joshua, in addition to his career as a shipping merchant, was an ardent patriot and
civic servant. His activities in the Revolutionary War include: member of the 1778
expedition to Rhode Island, chairman of the Salem Committee, partial owner of at least
eleven privateers or letters of marque, and shareholder in several privateers. Joshua's
MSS 46, p. 3
house (150 Washington Street)* was the residence of George Washington during his
1789 visit to Salem. When the War of 1812 began, Joshua helped finance at least three
privateers.
Joshua served the town of Salem as a selectman in 1810. He was on the
committee to establish the Salem-Danvers Aqueduct in 1796 and later served as its
director. He was the secretary to the Federal Office and a part owner of the Salem
Register. Joshua and his first wife, Sarah Lander, had four children. After Sarah's death
in 1809, Joshua married Susan (Hall) Magee. His son Joshua (1776-1840) married
Susanna Holyoke, the daughter of Dr. Edward Augustus Holyoke.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Although the WARD FAMILY PAPERS extend from 1718 to 1946, the bulk of
the papers ranges from 1740 to 1825. They include the joiner and chairmaking account
books of Miles Ward (1673/4-1764) and the shipping, business, and legal papers of Miles
Ward (1704-1792) and his son Joshua Ward (1752-1825). The remainder of the
collection contains personal and business papers for the descendants of Joshua Ward
(1699-1779), Miles Ward (1704-1792), John Ward (1707-1787), and Ebenezer Ward
(1710-1791). The collection has been arranged in four series: MILES WARD (1673/4-
1764) ACCOUNT BOOKS, MILES WARD (1704-1792) PAPERS, JOSHUA WARD
(1752-1825) PAPERS, and WARD RELATIVES' PAPERS.
The MILES WARD (1673/4-1764) ACCOUNT BOOKS, 1718-1755, contain his
accounts and a few receipts for his Salem business as a joiner.
The MILES WARD (1704-1792) PAPERS, which include his shipping, business,
and legal papers, range from 1729 to 1799. The Shipping Papers contain the ships'
papers for vessels he owned and for those on which he consigned cargo. His ships
primarily sailed to the West Indies and coastwise America carrying rum, molasses,
grains, and other cargoes. While the ships' papers, arranged alphabetically, include the
bills of lading, masters' and merchant house correspondence, ships' orders, crew lists,
accounts, and receipts for specific vessels, the miscellaneous shipping papers contain all
records for more than one ship or unidentified ships. Outfitting papers contain accounts
and receipts for the building and repairing of Miles's ships.
Miles Ward's daybooks and ledgers comprise the bulk of the Business Papers.
They contain accounts for cargo, ships' voyages, and his local mercantile business from
*Now numbered 148 Washington St., the location of the Higginson Book Company.
MSS 46, p. 4
1740 to 1789. Also contained in the Business Papers are miscellaneous accounts and
receipts for Miles's wharves, warehouses, cargoes, and domestic concerns (1734-1790).
His legal papers include deeds for land, wharves, and a pew, accounts of contributions to
the salary of Rev. Dudley Leavitt, Miles's 1790 will, and his estate papers.
The JOSHUA WARD (1752-1825) PAPERS, 1773-1832, include shipping and
business papers for Joshua's mercantile and distillery businesses.
Joshua's Shipping papers, which span the years 1775 to 1832, include records for
vessels owned by or which carried cargo for Joshua to ports in Europe, the West Indies,
Africa, and coastwise America. Ward's ships were involved in such activities as
privateering (in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, see Appendix 2),
fishing voyages, and West Indies and European trade. The Shipping Papers are arranged
in three subseries: ships' papers, general shipping papers, and shipping and merchant
house correspondence.
The ships' papers, which are arranged alphabetically, contain ships' orders, crew
lists, invoices, bills of lading, accounts of sales, portledge bills, and merchant house and
captains' correspondence. Several aspects of this subseries are worthy of note. At least
one of Ward's ships was involved with slave trading. Correspondence to the captain of
the Brig FAVORITE (Jan. 10, 1787 and July 14, 1787) gives instructions on the purchase
and sale of a cargo of slaves. A muster roll pamphlet for the Brig TYRANNICIDE lists
crew members returned to England from prize vessels captured by the brig.
The general shipping papers include miscellaneous shipping papers, account
books, insurance accounts, outfitting papers, and papers of Joshua's business partners.
Receipts, accounts, agreements, and correspondence referring to the building, repairing,
and outfitting of ships are located in the outfitting papers. The Nathan Ward Papers
contain primarily letters and invoices from Nathan to Joshua, which refer to the purchase,
sale, and loading of cargo. Correspondence from Nathan continues past the 1787
dissolvement of their firm. Included in these folders (B12, F5-6) are the legal agreement
for the establishment of their firm and the lease of their Petersburg, Virginia, store. One
folder (B12, F7) contains letters to Nathaniel Appleton and Nathan Frye, partners with
Joshua in many shipping ventures.
The shipping and merchant house correspondence is filed alphabetically by firm
name (see Appendix 3) and includes correspondence, accounts, and ship's papers from
foreign and American merchants. Correspondence from Ichabod and Nathan Nichols
(B15, F1), merchants in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, discusses the loading of cargo and
readying of vessels for sail, many of which were privateers. Letters from Joseph Bass
(B13, F1), Joshua's brother-in-law, include personal information as well as business.
The
miscellaneous shipping correspondence includes letters from captains of unidentified
vessels and letters from J. B. LaMarque (1795-1796), which describe political events in
Europe and America (B16, F7).
MSS 46, p. 5
The Business Papers include correspondence, distillery receipts, accounts, and
legal documents, miscellaneous receipts, account books, and legal documents. Because
Joshua's primary business concern was the import and export of West Indian goods and
New England rum, most of his business correspondence in some way reflects this pursuit.
Correspondence located here may, therefore, pertain to the shipping business, but it does
not, however, specifically discuss cargo or ships. Additional letters concern the distillery,
the Salem Register, and the Federal Office. The folder of legal documents for the
distillery (B17, F7) contains permission to build the distillery and deeds for its sale.
Joshua's account books contain accounts for his cargo, ships' voyages, distillery, and
domestic concerns. The legal documents include sale of the Salem Register, probate of
his will, and an inventory of his estate (B22, F11).
The WARD RELATIVES' PAPERS, which are divided into four groups, contain
the papers of Joshua Ward (1699-1779) and his heirs; the heirs of Miles Ward (1704-
1792); the heirs of John Ward (1707-1787); and the heirs of Ebenezer Ward (1710-1791).
Included in the papers of Joshua Ward (1699-1779) and Heirs are shipping papers
for Joshua (1699-1779), shipping and personal papers for his son Richard (1741-1824),
and personal correspondence for his great-grandchildren George Atkinson Ward (1793-
1865) and Sophia Langdon Ward (1855- ). Joshua Ward's (1699-1779)
shipping
papers (B22, F12) contain ship's papers for the Sch. BEAVER. These include bills of
lading, portledge bills, invoices, accounts, and receipts. The papers of Joshua's son
Richard (1741-1824) primarily contain letters written by Richard while master of the Brig
LOUISA from 1809 to 1810 and account books for his mercantile business from 1780 to
1784. George Atkinson Ward's (1793-1865) papers (B23, F1) include a personal
historical memorandum book that contains such entries as past minister's ordinations,
orations by local officials and ministers, and notations of historical events. Contained in
the Sophia Langdon Ward (1855- ) Papers (B23, F2) are her 1869 letters to her friend
Charlotte Nichols that discuss Sophia's adolescent concerns and infatuations.
Papers for the Heirs of Miles Ward (1704-1792) contain documents of Miles's
heirs by his first wife: his grandson Nathan (d. ca. 1792), great-grandchildren Frederick
Townsend Ward (1831-1862) and Elizabeth Colburn Ward (1839- ), and Miles's heirs
by his second wife: his son Nathaniel (1746-1768), grandson Joshua (1776-1840) and his
wife, Susanna (Holyoke) Ward, and their children Mary Holyoke Ward (1800-
),
Elizabeth Holyoke Ward (1804-1851), and Joshua Holyoke Ward (1808-1848).
The Nathan Ward (d. ca. 1792) Papers (B23, F3) contain his business and
personal correspondence. Of note is the June 17, 1779 letter from John Rowe to Nathan
and other Salem merchants describing the effects of the Revolution upon Salem trade,
and the May 21, 1785 letter from his uncle Goodale informing Nathan of the deaths of
Mrs. Safford and Nathan's brother Miles. Additional business papers from Nathan's
partnership with his uncle Joshua Ward (1752-1825) are located in Box 12, Folders 5-6.
MSS 46, p. 6
Among the Frederick Townsend Ward (1831-1862) Papers (B23, F4) are a printed
description of his death in China and several photographs.
The Susanna (Holyoke) Ward and Mary Holyoke Ward almanac/diaries contain
their interleaved diary entries along with the yearly almanacs. The entries include
notations of visits and personal expenses. The Joshua Holyoke Ward (1808-1848) Papers
include Joshua's 1842 appointment as Justice of the Peace, a genealogical letter from a
relative, accounts of his estate, and correspondence he acquired as agent for the heirs of
Silence Eliot (B25, F4-5).
Of note in the Papers of Andrew Abbot Ward (1828- ), an heir of John Ward
(1707-1787), are the 1875 Salem High School printed exercises for various subjects
(B25, F6).
The Papers of the Heirs of Ebenezer Ward (1710-1791) include shipping
correspondence for Ebenezer Jr. (1738-1773), deeds, business papers, and estate papers
for his son Miles (1744-1796), correspondence to Miles Ward (1805-1848) and Joseph
Chipman Ward (bp. 1773-1832), and Chipman Ward (1813-1861) correspondence. Also
included here are the Miles Ward (1805-1848) diaries describing his life and study before
entering Harvard College (V. 58-59).

was apprenticed to merchants in Salem. He afterward began business for
himself, and amassed a fortune, having at one time more than sixty square-

rigged ships on the ocean. He was a Democrat, and sympathized with Jefferson
during the embargo, notwithstanding the pecuniary injury to his business and
its unpopularity in New England. He removed to Boston, became a state
senator, and in 1810 was elected lieutenant governor.--His wife, Elizabeth Chip-
'
man, born in Essex County, Massachusetts, in May, 1756; died in Boston, 24
September, 1823, married Mr. Gray in 1782. Although the wife of the richest
(
man in Massachusetts, and probably in New England, she managed her
(
domestic affairs personally. A portion of her time was devoted to the poor, who
]
were the constant recipients of her benefactions.--Their son, Francis Ealley,
lawyer, born in Salem, Massachusetts, 19 September, 1790; died in Boston, 29
December 1856, was graduated at Harvard in 1809. He studied law with
William Prescott, but did not practise his profession. He was private secretary
to John Quincy Adams while the latter was minister to Russia, and served
frequently in the Massachusetts legislature. He was president of the Boston
athenaeum, and a fellow of Harvard in 1826-'36. In 1841 the degree of LL.D.
was conferred on him by Harvard. He left a collection of 3,000 rare engravings,
with $16,000 for keeping it in order and publishing a catalogue. He also left
$50,000 for the establishment and maintenance of a museum of comparative
zoology. The bestowal of these bequests was left to the option of his nephew,
William, and the latter presented them to Harvard in 1858, and also
contributed $25,000 for the purchase of books for the College library. The sum
for the establishment of a museum was supplemented by legislative
appropriation and private subscription, and a building erected, which was
dedicated in November, 1859, and placed in charge of Professor Louis Agassiz.
Mr. F. C. Gray published numerous orations and addresses, and a work on
"Prison Discipline" (Boston, 1847). He discovered a manuscript copy of the
Massachusetts "Body of Liberties" of 1641, which was published in the
"Collections of the State historical society (3d series, vol. viii.). Gray's Hall,
one of the buildings of Harvard, was named for these benefactors of the
college.--Another soil, John Chipman, lawyer, born in Salem, Massachusetts, 29
December 1793; died in Boston, Massachusetts, 3 March, 1881, was graduated
at Harvard in 1811. He never practiced law, but took an active interest and part
in public affairs, serving many years in the common council of Boston, and in
each branch of the Massachusetts legislature, and in the governor's council. He
delivered an oration for the Phi Beta Kappa society in 1821, and address before
the Massachusetts horticultural society, and a number of addresses before the
City authorities.-Horace, grandson of William, jurist, born in Boston,
Massachusetts, 1828, was graduated at Harvard in 1845, and at the law-school
in 1849. He was admitted to the bar in 1851. In 1854 he was appointed reporter
of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, and served for seven years. On 23
August, 1864, he became associate justice of the court, which office he held till

RE: Ward and Gray Family Papers
Hello Dr. Epp--
The Phillips Library of the Peabody Essex Museum does hold both Ward and Gray family papers. They do
not appear in our manuscript catalog the way you cited them because of reorganizations that have occured in
the last 50 years. I am not sure that I could find a specific item for you, and thus I suggest that you come to
the library to review the holdings.
What you are interested in is Mss 46, Ward Family Papers, 1718-1945 which consists of 24 boxes and 59
volumes. There are several archives of Gray papers, but you are probably interested in the William Gray
Papers, 1781-1840 (Mss 115) which consists of 1 box and 1 volume.
The library is open Tues., Wed. and Fri. 10-5 and Thurs. 1-8. Anyone on duty in the Reading Room will be
able to assist you.
If there is anything else I can do for you before your visit, do not hesitate to contact me.

Subject: Ward and Gray Family Papers
I am engaged in preparing a biography of George Bucknam Dorr (1853-1944), founder and first
Superintendent of Acadia National Park (1916-1944).
Mr. Dorr is the son of Mary Ward Dorr (wife of Charles Hazen Dorr) a member of the Ward and Gray
families that were so important during the era of Salem shipping.
The National Archives contains a letter dated 17 December 1946 from Salem Maritime National
Historic Site Superintendent Edwin W. Small drirected to the NPS Regional Director (Region One) that
details some manuscripts held by the Essex Institute relative to the Ward and Gray families:
William Gray and William Gray Jr. Letters (1804-1852),
John Ward, Receipts, (1821-1822)
Joshua Ward, Bills, Invoices, Letters, etc. (1858-1839)
Miles Ward, Commercial (1699-1819)
Ward Family, Commercial (1709-1832).
Superintendent Small asked whether Dorr/Ward/Gray family papers might be donated by Acadia
National Park to his Institute; a letter from NPS Assistant Director Hillery Tolson (12/19/46) also
indicated interest in such a transferral. I have uncovered no documentation that such a donation

actually transpired.
Before I plan a visit to your facility, could you determine whether this information is accurate and
whether there might be additional Ward and Gray family manuscipts in your possession, especially
those that may have been secured since this memo was written more than fifty years ago.
I appreciate the professional courtesy involved in handling this request.

Dorr Family Papers, p. 2
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
EBENEEZER DORR (1739-1809) was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1739.
He was initially a leather dresser in Boston and later established a store at
27 Long Wharf. He formed a mercantile partnership with Caleb Davis of Boston
as early as 1761. Dorr married Abigail Cunningham in 1762, and they raised at
least four sons before Abigail's death in 1798.
Their sons JOSEPH DORR (1767-1831) and JOHN DORR (1770-1855) became
shipping partners, and in 1796 they maintained an office at 10 Kilby Street,
Boston. ANDREW C. DORR (1772- ?) was involved in the family shipping business,
but his role has not been precisely defined. SULLIVAN DORR (1778-1858) was the
family's agent in Canton from 1799-1803. In 1804 he returned to America and
married Lydia Allen of Providence, Rhode Island. He eventually became
President of the Washington Insurance Company and a Trustee of Brown
University.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The DORR FAMILY PAPERS are composed of ships papers, correspondence,
account books, bills and receipts associated with Ebeneezer Dorr, his sons
John and Joseph and other family members. Although the papers extend from
1781-1865, the bulk of the collection is related to the family's shipping
activities from 1793 to 1825.
The DORR FAMILY SHIPS PAPERS contain documents related to vessels owned
or chartered by members of the Dorr family that sailed to South America,
Europe and Canton. The papers of ship Astrea are comprised of a 1789 agreement
and invoice for a cargo of furs to be transported and sold at Canton by James
Magee. Material associated with ship Esther concerns the condemnation of the
vessel at Lima in 1823 for an alleged violation of Peruvian trade regulations.
[See the Appendix for additional information on the voyages of Dorr vessels.]
The EBENEEZER DORR PAPERS include correspondence, bills, receipts and
Elias Norberry Estate Papers. The earliest correspondence is largely related
to trade at Amsterdam with the Akker and Heineken merchant house. Other
correspondence includes letters from Joseph and Andrew C. Dorr on family
shipping activities. [Throughout this collection correspondence between family
members has been filed with the recipient.] The bills and receipts in this
section are mostly for personal expenses.
The JOHN DORR PAPERS are comprised of correspondence, account books and
some miscellaneous papers. Most of the earliest letters are those written by
Joseph Dorr while in Paris and London. Joseph apparently acted as shipping
agent for the family business in those cities, and his correspondence is
associated with market conditions in Europe and the progress of specific
purchases and sales. Letters from Henry and Sullivan Dorr contain some
personal information and news of friends and acquaintances. In addition
Sullivan Dorr's letters from 1843-46 concern the progress of negotiations on
claims against the Peruvian government for losses on the 1821-23 voyage of
ship Esther. John Dorr's Waste Books contain shipping and business accounts
for a number of vessels. There are also entries for real estate transactions,
the
Ebeneezer Dorr Estate and accounts of John Jacob Astor in the two volumes.
Dorr Family Papers, p 3
The JOSEPH DORR correspondence is mostly from Ebeneezer and John
regarding European shipping activities. Of particular interest are the letters
from Richard J. Cleveland (1812, 1822) supporting the initiation of
hostilities in the War of 1812 and discussing the relative merits of marriage
and bachelor life. The MISCELLANEOUS FAMILY PAPERS are comprised of a deed to
Amy Dorr for land in Medfield from the Joseph Plimpton Estate (1799) and a
copy of a single letter from Sullivan Dorr to William S. Wetmore of Lima,
Peru. The MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS include accounts for an unidentified house, a
copy of the decree of the "Supreme Director of Chile"
concerning
reform
of
commercial regulations (1822) and a copy of a "convention" between the United
States and Peru dated 1846.
