PATHE NEWS 03/11
Today marks the first anniversary of British Pathe's web site launch.
In the 12 months we've been on-line over 2 million people have visited the site from all
over the world, downloading somewhere in the region of 20,000 hours of newsfilm.
These figures compare dramatically with the levels of access to the archive before it was
launched on-line; we usually hosted about 1000 visitors per year who would access about 40
hours of footage, generally for use in television productions. That's a 2000 fold increase
in access!
The impact of the internet on accessibility to archives is only just beginning, however,
and, work is already under way here at ITN Archive to add another 3000 hours over the next
few years.
The potential of imagery once it has been digitised is underlined not only by these access
figures but also by what can be produced from the files once they're in the "digital
domain". For example we were able to produce 12 million digital images in just six weeks
this summer. We estimate that this would have taken about 40 years to achieve in the
"analogue" world...
Finally, apologies to everyone who experienced problems for a few days in October when we
launched "Version 2.0"; extensive coverage from the world's press resulted in 6 million
"hits" in just 36 hours, slowing down our servers considerably...
All the Best

PATHE NEWS 03/05
The big news this month is that British Pathe is now part of ITN Archive.
This will have a dramatic impact on professional users who will now be able to access over 500,000
hours of entertainment, leisure and news footage spanning three centuries from just one source.
All queries for traditional British Pathe footage sales should therefore now be addressed to ITN
Archive.
The British Pathe web site will, for the time being, remain exactly as it is now. We hope that in the
future, after we've launched our stills and Quicktime versions, material will be added from either ITN's
other newsreel collections (including Universal News, Gaumont News and Paramount News) or from
its modern news sources (including Reuters, Visnews and, of course, ITN).
If you go to the site now you will notice a link to the ITN Archive web site, as well as a few new
features we've added, most notably a "Top Ten" section and an "Anniversary Finder".
Each time you log on you should also see an "on this day" pop-up window which features a story
selected randomly from the archive which was released sometime between 1896 and 1970 on today's
date.
YOU'LL ALSO NOTICE THAT WE'VE REDUCED THE PRICE OF HIGH RESOLUTION CLIPS
FOR POWERPOINT USERS TO JUST 25GBP (ABOUT 34 DOLLARS/EUROS) FOR A THREE
MONTH PERIOD AND THAT WE NOW ACCEPT AMERICAN EXPRESS.
All the Best
