Dear Mr. Rowell:- As Secretary of the Village Improvement Associat ion will you let me know if any votes or resol- utions have been passed in connection with the building of roads in Lafayette National Park? No such vote has been passed when I have been present but I did not know but the question had been raised at some meeting when I was not there. We are much disturbed here over Mr. George Wharton Pepper's objection to the building of roads pro- jected in the Park system. The roads in question within the Park lands that have been approved by the Secretary of the Interior are the ones from Eagle Lake Road along the west side of Green Mountain and along Jordan Pond to a point near the Jordan Pond House, the one leading from this road near the top of Great Pond Hill to the top of Green or Cadillac Mountain, and in addition to these two connecting links to roads already constructed, one near the south end of Jordan Mountain and one skirting the northern boundary of Sargent Mountain. I do not know the length of the two first mentioned roads. You, however, are familiar with that location. The connecting links referred to are less than three miles in extent. It is our feeling here that this road system will give persons a chance to see the beauties or Mt. Desert Island who either cannot or will not climb the mountains. The objection that it mars the landscape, does not seem to me to be well taken considering that there is only a mile of road to 1000 acres of land in this system. Further- more, these roads will be so hidden by trees, rocks, precipices as to be hardly noticeable. Even with these roads built there certainly will be enough mountain trails far from automobiles and carriages to busy the most ambitious mountain climber.
