My dear Peabody: When you telephoned the other day, I neglected to ask you your Boston address, SO I am shooting this into the blue. I have read the article and editorial in the Bar Harbor Times. It simply pours out the vials of wrath on the heads of those who oppose the road plan. It would have been a stronger article if if had shown why you oppose the plan and then answered your arguments. There is one question which this road matter brings up which is rather fundamental in the development of the island, and which I think few people SEW when the Park was created. This is the fact that a National Park is meant for all the people, not for any particular group. As such, the more people it draws, the better the Park Service likes it; since that means a strong argument for appropriations, Much as we may dislike to see the island overrun by excursionists, we must admit that the Parks are primarily created for the use and enjoy- ment of the people. This view is bound to prevail in the long run, and we will get further by working with it than by attempting to blook it. At the same time, the National Parks serve another purpose, that of outdoor museums for preserving our native flora and fauna in an undisturbad condition.
