* April 7, 1980 Dear Sandy and Vi Easter, with a communion service at the hands of American clergymen, is over, Hopefully, if one of them is returning via Rome, he can drop this off. Be assured that my morale is high, and my circumstance, if confining, not bad. I suppose the big change came in February when we were at last allowed to talk. For all of us, it was at first rather a strange, guilt-ridden experience, fearful of being caught. We heard the full voices of those who previously had only whispered. And, as conversation became more general, personalities began to emerge which, for a while, presented a new range of problems, since resolved. One of them remarked, "There are 2 kinds of people in this world, hostages and non- hostages, and we seem to be in the wrong category! There is a further element to that remark, in that hostages, as Scott Fitzgerald told us about the very rich, are different. It is a total experience, and it will be curious, for all of us, to see how we interact with the normal world once we get out. But To Tomasino and Anna.
