January 15, 1980 Dearest Wee I yesterday received your letter of December 11, and what a nice shot in the arm it was! I am not, as you say, easily daunted. Occasionally a moment of depression, but basically I am fine. Your comment about the consensus of the American people was also very encouraging. Mail remains a problem, as you noted. I am getting letters from people I don't even know. But keep writing Typing helps. Restrict mail To yourself, Mum and Pop, and the boys. Since my last letter, the theory, on volume, has changed. Write a lot. Mum wrote that Duncan you a 97 in math. I hope he keeps it up, he is basically very smart. Will he be taking crew of baseball in the Spring? My reading matter is varied. At this point, I have a poor English Translation of Matanzie's Triumph of the Middle Class. Very French. Full of inaccuracy, particularly about the United States. But fascinating perceptions on the effect of credit, or the lack of it, on political development. They gave us each a New Testament. And There is a pile of historical novels, which normally I don't like, but they pass the time of day. Anyway, my morale is good.
