VIEW OF NEWPORT HOUSE AND COTTAGES
The Newport House and Cottages.
Opens June 1sl.
AR HARBOR, the Queen of Eastern Summer Resorts, annually attracts thousands of
visitors who flock hither from every state in the union to enjoy her life-giving
breezes, her charming and diversified scenery and her beautiful walks and drives. But, for
the sojourner from the city, worn out in body and mind with business cares, or sated and
ennuyed with the social gayeties of the past winter, these attractions would lose half their
charm were he not surrounded in his temporary summer quarters with all the comforts
and modest luxuries of a home.
To those intending to spend a season at Bar Harbor, the Newport House offers all
that can be desired in the way of comfortable and homelike accommodations. The house,
neat and cheerful in appearance, is situated on rising ground at a short distance from
the steamboat landing, and is the only hotel in Bar Harbor on the seashore. Its taste-

fully kept grounds run down almost to the water's edge and abut on the beautiful path
skirting the bay shore. The wide, airy verandas command an unobstructed view of
Frenchmans bay with its blue expanse, dotted with the white wings of yachts and passing
ships, its rugged islets, and its distant background of hills ; and the ocean breezes keep
the house delightfully cool, even on the hottest of summer days.
In its interior arrangements the Newport House compares favorably with even the most
pretentious of summer resort hotels. It has large and airy public rooms, built and furnished
especially with a view to the comfort of the guests. The dining room, lofty and well
ventilated, is lighted by numerous windows extending nearly to the floor and commanding
a wide view of the grounds and the bay. The walls and ceiling are tastefully decorated,
and it is in all respects a model dining room.
The bedrooms are spacious, well lighted and thoroughly ventilated, and have an abund-
ance of closet room. Their windows command an excellent view of mountain and ocean,
and the finish is bright and cheerful. Every room is furnished in the most. comfortable
and homelike manner.
The house is fitted throughout with electric lights and bells ; the sanitary arrange-
ments are modern and complete, and every precaution is taken for the health and safety

of the guests. There is an excellent fire service ; iron fire escapes communicate with
the halls on each floor ; and a watchman is on duty during the night.
Eagle Lake water, pronounced by experts to be the purest and most healthful of
drinking water, is supplied direct from the mains ; and baths throughout the house are
fitted for both hot and cold water.
The Newport House has always enjoyed the patronage of many of the most select
and substantial among the summer visitors and its merits may be judged of by the
fact that these people return to it year after year for their summer home.
The house situated on Newport Avenue is adjoining the Ladies' Club and Mt. Desert
Reading Room and is but a short distance from the post office, the banks, and the tele-
graph offices and telephone exchange.
A porter will meet intending guests at the wharf, when previously notified. He will
also attend departing guests and see to the purchase of their tickets and the proper
checking of their baggage. A well appointed livery stable is connected with the house,
and good and safe conveyances can be procured therefrom at any time at reasonable rates.
People desiring to procure rooms at the Newport House will do well to write at an
early" date and no room can be held for anyone later than the tenth of July.
