Ron,
Thank you very much for your generosity, both to The Trustees and
to me, offering to send your book. Please know I am very grateful
for both. And yes, I fully agree that more recognition of the ARC
work is overdue. Alison and Sarah do a terrific job there. And it is
all SO critical.

Alison,
Last night I read the Summer 2020 about the ARC. learning more about
the Kendall family and the history of the Norfolk Charitable Trust
donation of its building.
I
had a flashback to my years on the Trustees Historic Resources
Committee and in that file I found a Dec. 10, 2000 introductory letter to
Susan Hill Dolan thanking her for researching the relationship between
Dorr and Charles Eliot. She then invited me to come to Long Hill where
the first volumes of the Standing Committee were housed. Twenty years
ago
Did the big move go smoothly, as you hoped?

Dear Alison,
First let me apologize for suggesting that no historical content was planned for the 125th b-day of The Trustees. I assumed that there
would have been content on the Internet and paper publications already forecasted, and not seeing any I jumped to the wrong
conclusion.
But from what you report below I'm heartened and look forward to seeing what the ARC will contribute, especially the bio content
and the commemorative booklet. The BPL exhibit sounds most interesting though I won't be able to attend the opening since my book
launch party takes place on the 7th in Bar Harbor.
By the way, I think I mentioned during my last visit that I have a typescript copy of "Eliots and Asticou Foreside, Northeast Harbor,
Notes" by Charles W. Eliot, 2nd. 45 pp. It describes the Eliot compound on Mount Desert Island with detailed descriptions of the
property and family residents spanning three generations; it contains names and dates of Ellot family members from 1880-1980.
When I last visited you mentioned that possessing these family connections might help with developing relationships in the here and
now. I can bring it along for you to copy when I am next in Massachusetts, early April, if you like.
Again thank you for all the interesting items contained in your most recent email. It appears that your emphasis on the continuing
conservation engagement of the Eliot family in Massachusetts parallels the strong emphasis I will give to their influence kin Downeast
Maine, and have given in Creating Acadia National Park.

I've been meaning to reach out to you and connect so I am so glad you wrote! We have been doing a lot of

We now have bios of chairmen, presidents, and founders. We have chased down some rabbit holes like church

The two aspects we have explored are:

From the Sea to the Mountains: The Trustees 125th
Anniversary
April 2 through August 28, 2016
In 1891 landscape architect Charles Eliot asserted the bold idea to form
an organization that would "preserve, for public use and enjoyment,
properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in
Massachusetts." At a time when land conservation and being green'
was not widely discussed, his vision was forward thinking. Today, the
organization he founded, The Trustees of Reservations
(http://www.thetrustees.org/) , oversees more than 26,000 acres of
preserved places from the Atlantic Coast to the Berkshire Mountains.
In celebration of their 125th anniversary, the Norman B. Leventhal Map
Center at the Boston Public Library is partnering with The Trustees on a
40-item exhibition, featuring maps, photographs, and historical items
from both collections. Visitors will be introduced to Trustees' properties,
become familiar with a number of distinctive map formats, learn about
natural landforms and geologic terms, and cultivate an appreciation for
the natural, historical, and cultural treasures of Massachusetts.

I've been reviewing my TTOR files for content relevant to my second
edition of An Historical Sketch and Record of the Hancock County
Trustees of Public Reservations. Written and compiled in 1939 by Rev.
Samuel Atkins Eliot, the Maine trustees have asked me to overlay a

the [Harvard College] corporation and the Standing Committee of the
Trustees of Public Reservations in Massachusetts are Harvard men." I
knew of the overlap--but not the extent--and I wondered whether
anyone since then had researched the influence of Harvard on the
origin and development of The Trustees, especially during its
formative first few decades. I don't recall Abbott's Saving Special

not being disseminated to Trustees members, with exception of "The

Dear Ron,
My sincere thanks for taking the time to send such a lovely note. I was delighted to read that the
biographical essays I wrote for the Appleton exhibition met with your enthusiastic approval - it means
a lot to hear that! I very much enjoyed "getting to know" the Appleton family with the research for that
exhibition, and I now have even greater appreciation for all that they did and contributed to the farm,
each in his or her own time. We were able to hang the show in the Old House, and it was very special to
install SO many family portraits in the house where they all lived or summered. It will be up until June
1st, just in case you are anywhere nearby in the coming months.
I also thank you for your note of appreciation my and Susan Edwards's efforts on behalf of TTOR. It was
indeed my great pleasure to help you with this endeavor, and I am SO pleased that it truly was of great
help to you and your research. Warm congratulations on the news about the publication of the
biography of George Dorr, and in conjunction with the anniversary. We will look forward to your book
coming out, and it is very kind of you to offer to share the sections about TTOR being a model for the
trustee organization at Mount Desert. I would love to see that, as I am sure Alison Bassett would, too.
Thank you again for your thoughtful correspondence, and I will look forward to seeing your writings in
the near future. We do miss having you join us at our Historic Resources Committee meetings, but I will
share with that group your good news about the book. Until then, take good care.

Dear Susan,
Thanks to Alison Bassett, I recently learned about your "Of Farm and Family" exhibit available
on the web.
I examined the biographical essays most carefully. Wonderfully executed! It transported me
back some six years ago when Susan Edwards and you gave me such liberal access to the
TTOR attic archives at the Great House of the Crane Estate. I recall not only my discovery of
Charles Eliot's Scrapbook documenting the founding of the Trustees but also that Francis
Randall Appleton, Sr. was in the Harvard class one year behind George B. Dorr. From the most
meticulous records kept by FRA, Sr., I was able to extrapolate to the life and times of
Dorr, whose personal information about those years is minimal. Then to find that the two of
them were allies in the effort during the first decade of the 20th-century to extend the Harvard
Yard down to the Charles River, a project Appleton championed with the Harvard Riverside
Associates,
Sorry for the rambling, but I wanted to give you a sense of my indebtedness to you and other
TTOR staff for after such a long time I can now report that The Making of Acadia National
Park: A Biography of George B. Dorr will be published by The Friends of Acadia as part of
the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service and Acadia National Park as well. We are now
in the copyediting stage and much in the manuscript concerns the Eliot family, and especially
the founding of TTOR as the model for the trustee organization on Mount Desert Island. If
you'd like a sample, I can forward it to you.
I hope we get to meet once again now that I'm further removed from Massachusetts. If I can
ever be of help to you in serevice to TTOR, do let me know.

Dear Ronald,
Thank you for your email and happy new year. I am a big fan of TTOR history and I greatly enjoy reading about Charles Eliot's drive and
ambition. We are fortunate to have had such a force as our founder. We have been talking about this anniversary and are planning to have
a sequence of events and communications to celebrate his contribution to conservation and open space and acknowledge how far the
movement has come in the 125 years since.
We look forward to your being a part of it and as we get into 2014 will keep your name top of mind for help and ideas.

Dear Ms. Erickson:
As a former member of the Trustees Historic Resources Committee and a colleague of ARC archivist Miriam Spectre,
I offer a suggestion for your consideration.
2015 will be the 125th anniversary of the seminal Charles Eliot letter published in Garden and Forest
(February 19, 1890) proposing the exportation of the Massachusetts land trust concept, which would become the law
of the Commonwealth fifteen months later.
Where? To coastal Maine where his father, Charles W. Eliot, and George B. Dorr would champion many of the TTOR principles to
develop the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations. Donated land secured by the HCTPR over more than a decade led

to the establishment in 1916 of what is now Acadia National Park.
I have researched the archives at Long Hill and the Crane Estate before their relocation to the ARC, tracing the evolution of the
Trustee pioneers with their counterparts on the coast of Maine. This work on The Making of Acadia National Park will be
published in 2016 by The Friends of Acadia.
At that time Americans will celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service and the establishment America's first national
park east of the Mississippi. The Trustees of Reservations may already have plans to link their endeavors with this national
celebration. If not, I write to suggest that consideration be given to the philanthropic legacy of Massachusetts residents--like the
Eliot and Dorr family--in the American land trust movement.
If I can be of assistance please let me know.
Sincerely,

Hello Ron,
I
am sad to be receiving this news. I have enjoyed working with you on the scrapbook project, at
committee meetings and around the ARC. Meeting Keith Morgan, through your introduction, was a great
day around here. Thank you for all that you have done.
I wish you all the best. Keep us updated on your research and good luck with the move.
Mark

Dear Mark,
It is with much regret that I inform you of my resignation from the Historic Resources Committee.
Elizabeth and I will be moving this summer to a retirement community (Cornwall Manor) in
central Pennsylvania, a few miles from Hershey.
Illness and travel have far too frequently prevented me from participating in HRC activities to the
degree that I expected of myself--and that the Trustees rightly expect of their committee
participants. I have greatly valued the opportunities that committee membership has afforded me.
Quarterly visits to Trustee properties have enlightened my sense of place and brought me in
contact with individuals with shared conservation values. I especially value the opportunity to
research the Trustee archives when they were located in the upper floor of the Crane Estate Great
House. Discovering the previously unknown Charles Eliot scrapbook tracing the first decade of
the Trustees was of immense personal value. And I wish the ARC great success in preserving
physically and digitally its historic treasures.

We will continue our Trustee membership. My research on the Eliot family and the Trustees has
found a central place in the manuscript that I have recently completed, The Making of Acadia
National Park. We look forward to visiting in the years ahead the few Trustee properties that we
have not yet visited. I wish you continued success with your efforts to educate the public
regarding Trustee land stewardship and historic preservation.
Most Cordially,

Hi Ron,

Castle Hill is crawling with film crews so we are not using the front door right now. If

Dear Susan,
Thank you for being SO thorough in researching the issues that I
raised relativeto Charles Eliot and his relationships with George B.
Dorr.
I suspected that TTOR might have little primary or secondary
material but I am appreciative of the contact with Gordon Abbott. I
will contact him at a later time but for the time being I would
appreciate a copy of Saving Special Places.
Regarding Keith Morgan, I did identify his research into Eliot
several months ago and he too I will contact now that you've given
me his institututional affiliation.
I am also aware of the Charles Eliot: Landscape Architect work
aassembled by Eliot's dad which is an excellent resource, as you
noted.
I was not aware of the MDC connection which I will pursue.
As I begin to assemble some narrative regarding this relationship, I
will follow your suggestion and re-establish contact with you. It
may well be that through more concentrated archival research that
some new insights into the TTOR founder emerge that might
interest other members besides those of us who are historically
inclined.
Please pass along to Wes Ward my appreciation for his helpful
suggestions.
If you have not had contact with Margie Coffin at the Olmsted
Center regarding her research into Eliot, let me know and I'll
provide you with her address and phone number should you want to
pursue this. Publications currently in draft from the Olmsted Center
appear to contain historical information about Eliot that I have not
yet found elsewhere.

Dear Mr. Epp,
I spoke this morning with our Director of Land Conservation, Wes Ward, who
was very helpful and gave me a number of sources which might prove helpful
to you.
- Unfortunately, we have very little in terms of primary or secondary source
materials, and it is mainly secondary institutional archives material about
The Trustees. However, former Trustees of Reservations Director Gordon
Abbott did search all our files for his book, Saving Special Places, a
history of The Trustees of Reservations, published 4 or 5 years ago. If you
do not have a copy of that, please let me know and I can send you one. He
currently lives at 3 Tucks Point Road, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA,01944, and
his phone number is 978/526-4436. Wes thought that he would be happy to
help you.
- There is a professor at Boston University who did a short monograph on
Eliot about 3 years ago. His name is Keith Morgan. (He also did a book
about Charles Platt). Wes also thought that Keith had a graduate student
doing a project on Eliot now. Keith has been helpful to us here at The
Trustees and Castle Hill, and I am sure he would be glad to speak with you.
- You may also try the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) in Boston,
where Eliot worked as a consultant for a number of years.
- Another helpful book would be Charles Eliot: Landscape Architect,
assembled by his father, Charles W. Eliot. You are probably well aware of

this book , as the director of libraries, but, if not, it is an excellent
collection of materials (probably the most salient materials) and was put
out by the University of Massachusetts Press in cooperation with the
American Library of Landscape History in Amherst. (Robin Karson, the
director at that library, has done some work for The Trustees and may be
helpful to you as well).
I hope that this information provides some assistance to you. Please feel
free to call me with any questions. I, in turn, would be interested to
learning about any relationship or correspondance between Eliot and Dorr.
Please let me know if you find anything or let me know when you publish your
research project. Our organization is always interested in learning about
these pioneering founders.
Best of luck to you in your research.
Sincerely,
Susan Hill Dolan

Dear Susan,
Thank you for returning my call. I appreciate your efforts to identify
any TTOR primary documents relative to Charles Eliot that might

shed some light on his relationship with George B. Dorr. If such
documents are held by TTOR, I would appreciate an opportunity to
examine them.
I am aware of the Eliot papers at Harvard and am planning a
research trip later this winter after I develop some lines of inquiry
with National Park Service historians and landscape architects at
the Olmsted Center in Brookline.
I look forward to earing from you.
