Department of the Interior: Museum Services Branch. History of the Interior Museum
Page 1 of 3
History of the Interior Museum
Early in 1935, Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes decided to establish a museum to portray the Interior Department's history,
goals, and activities. Since the new Interior Building's plans were already complete, a wing of offices was modified to accommodate
the museum. The National Park Service received the task of designing and installing the exhibits. The Public Works Administration
allotted $100,000 for the museum and other funding for murals and structural changes. About nineteen staff members worked on the
project, including curators, preparators, and managers.
The completed exhibits displayed the activities of nine bureaus, the Secretary's office, and other agencies such as Howard University
and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Called a "new standard in museum presentation," the facility opened March 9, 1938, to rave reviews and
massive crowds. Over 10,000 people a month viewed the 1000 speciments, 500 photographs, 100 models, 12 wall maps, 8 murals,
11 dioramas, and 1450 hand lettered labels.
Bureau of Indian Affairs exhibit, Department of the Interior Museum, 1950s. The Bureau of Indian Affairs was represented in the Interior
Museum by two dioramas, nine permanent exhibits, a map of Indian Reservation locations, and cases for temporary displays. Collectively, these
presented aspects of Indian life, a history of Indian land ownership and tribal governments, as well as examples of Native arts and crafts.
The new museum had an active role in the Department's activities. It hosted orientations for new employees and receptions for
special events. Temporary exhibits included special Centennial presentations, a discussion of Interior's World War II efforts, a
display of Indian gifts, and the largest coal core specimen ever drilled. Visitors were enthusiastic, and the museum stayed open on
weekends to accomodate public demand.

symbols of the sun, mountains and water was adopted to represent the
department's diverse responsibilities. But the buffalo has prevailed and
there has been no more talk of killing the buffalo.
