FDR & George Dorr
Dear Mr. Epp:
This is in response to your e-mail request concerning 1940 correspondence between
President Roosevelt and George Buckham Dorr, founder of Acadia National Park, in our
collections.
We located a folder of correspondence with Mr. Dorr in the President's Personal File dated
between June and December 1940. It consists of 15 pages. In one letter dated August 1,
1940, Mr. Dorr mentions Acadia National Park and donating his family's property called
"Oldfarm" on Mount Desert Island as a presidential retreat. President Roosevelt declines
the offer and suggests that Mr. Dorr annex the land to the park. The other letters praise
President Roosevelt character and his appointment of Henry Parkman as Assistant Secretary
of the Navy.
If you would like copies of these documents, the Library charges 50 cents per page for
photocopies with a $10.00 minimum per order. This order would be $10.00. Prepayment is
required. A check or money order should be payable to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library
You may also use a credit card. Please provide the card name, number, expiration date,
and a daytime telephone number. Do not send credit card information by e-mail, as our
