Dear Sandra,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your helpful information about Pinchot and his relationship with LaFarge.
I am familiar with Grey Towers; I've visited the property many times enroute to my birthplace in Allentown, PA. However, I
have not explored their archives. Do you have experience with their collections?
I would very much appreciate receiving a copy of the LaFarge article on "A Winter Ascent of Tahawus." And contact
information regarding LaFarge's grand-daughter would be helpful. I wonder whether you have uncovered any surviving
LaFarge Papers that may have been preserved and organized by an institution or family members.
Regarding the Pinchot Diary at the LOC, can you offer a bit more detail: timeframe, frequency of entries, detail depth or
superficiality, etc. I've checked the recent "Conservation Diaries of Gifford Pinchot" but wonder from your reply whether
other diaries exist. I'm also well aware of the enormity of the Pinchot LOC holdings and the lack of a reliable finding aid
according to Pinchot's most recent biographer, Char Miller.
Best regards,
Ron

Hi Ronald,
Thank you for your interest in my work. I have presented a lecture about Pinchot and his Adirondack connection at the

Adirondack Museum, SO I have done a bit of research about him (plus, the old family home "Grey Towers" is near my PA
residence). He is a very interesting character.
The LaFarge connection came from my study of the two men climbing Mount Marcy in the winter (during the Blizzard of
1899, and being only the second winter on record). LaFarge didn't make the summit; he turned back just 200 feet below the
top. This info is from Pinchot's diary at the LOC and from an article by C. Grant LaFarge, "A Winter Ascent of Tahawus" in
Outing magazine, April 1900. It is a hard-to-find magazine and I can't recall where I found it. I can send you a copy in a few
weeks when I return for a visit to PA if you can't find it somewhere. It has photos by LaFarge, too.
I can also put you in touch with LaFarge's grand-daughter if you wish.
Best regards,
Sandra Weber
