Bar Harbor Man And Daughter Die In Fire William E. Sherman, 60, and his daughter, H. Elizabeth, 13, died last Saturday, when flames swept a three room cottage on Big Cranberry Island. Carmen Sanford, 13, escaped the blaze. According to authorities, Sher- man and the two girls had gone to the island to spend the week- end. Hancock County Attorney Gerald Wass of Blue Hill, said the Sanford girl told him, she and Elizabeth had left the cot- tage about 9 p.m., to make a telephone call. After returning to the cottage Sherman started to light a char- coal grill on the kitchen table and the can of fluid exploded. She said, Sherman yelled to the girls to get out, but Betty panic- ed and jumped on a couch. Car- men broke la window and after trying to get Betty out, crawled through the widow. Firemen found the Sanford girl hysterical. They later found the bodies of Sherman and his daughter, in the ruins. Deputy Sheriff Harland Urqu- hart said officials found a gal- lon can of charcoal lighter, with its cap blown off, indicating an explosion. 19-63
