THE BANGOR
IN THE ARMY NOW-These 27 young men Friday became the first from
Northern Maine to be inducted into the U. S. Army under the new draft law. They
are being sworn in by Lt. George Byron, le ft. in ceremonies held at the Bangor In-
duction Center. The other officer in the picture is Lt. Col. Allen E. Rice, command-

The 27 northeastern Mai... 2 men
who were sworn into Army serv-
ice Friday as the first group of
men from this section to be in-
ducted under the new draft law
received a sendoff Friday night by
members of James W. Williams
post, American Legion.
A contingent of Legionnaires was
at the railroad station to give each
boy best wishes, a package of
cigarettes and "a pat on the back.'
The group left for Fort Devens,
Mass., and 21 months of Army duty.
They were sworn in at
the Bangor Induction Center
vby Lt. George Byron, who
stated that the draft originally
called for 30 men but that three
prospective draftees had taken
marital vows since passing their
pre-induction examinations.
On hand for the ceremonies
were: Lt. Col. Allen E. Rice, com-
manding officer of the New Eng-
land Recruiting district: Capt.
Paul Merrick of State Selective
Service headquarters at Augusta:
and Capt. Harold Fancher, officer
in charge of the Bangor U. S.
Army and Air Force Recruiting
station.
A contingent of 30 more men
from this section are scheduld to
be sworn in at the center on Sept.
22 and pre-induction will continue
at the center Tuesday when 32
men from Washington county and
18 from Penobscot county will be
processed
