March 10, 1927. Hon. Hubert Work, Secretary of the Interior, Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. Secretary: I have read with care your communication of February 28th to Mr. George B. Dorr, Super- intendent of the Lafayette National Park, Bar Harbor, Maine and the letter of Mr. John D. Rockefeller Jr. of February 24, 1927 requesting authority to construct certain roads through park lands and viewed your man as to the same. I beg to adivse you that I have received carefully prepared and vigorously worded com- munications from influential residents of Ber Harbor and numbers of its Village Improvement Society inviting my attention to this request and asking me to oppose your 'granting this appli- cation. I note in the letter of Mr. Rockefeller, he states, this matter has been under consideration since 1922 and it occurs to me that since that date to the present no official or real omportun- ity has been of "forded to "the permanent residents of Mt. Desert Island the representatives of the several Village Improvement Societies and others who have shown interest in the road and trail de- velopment of the island" to discuss or advise you as to these specific roads. I am a permanent resident of Mt. Desert Is- land, vote and own property there. I am and have been President of the Village Improvement Society of Bar Harbor which is by far the largest on the Island for several years. I know there are many opposed to any more roads being opened through the Park but I am not orposed to opening more roads and in the past have approved of much that has been done in this way by Mr. Rockefeller and
