My dear Mr. Dorr, The Chairmen of the various Mount Desert Path Committees met at my house yesterday afternoon and Mr. Turner reported his interview with you. We all feel entirely satisfied with the arrangements that you have suggested and wish to assureyou how anxious we are to CO- operate with you in every way concerning the great work you are carrying on. We only hope that you will permit us to confer with you in connection with any roads for the use of the automobile that you may consider, as we feel anxious that so far as possible the mountain sides shall not be changed. We recognize that there must be a certain part of the roads pass- ing through the Park for the benefit of those who use the automobile, but we think the pedestrian trail system should be left, so far as possi- ble, untouched. I personally cannot help but feel that a perfectly constructed road following the old one on Green Mountain would answer for a great many years all the requirements of the automobilist and present an opportunity to him of enjoying a view that is probably ex- tensive enough to entirely satisfy those who wish to gain an impression of the beauty of the sea and land that the elevation of Green Mountain allows. I think the members of the Path Committee would be very glad if you would forward me say fifty time-sheets that we may familiar- ize curselves with them, and perhaps one of your clerks would make out an imaginary time-sheet showing exactly the form that your office and the Department at Washington desire, which would be useful and expedient under the circumstances for us to follow. Our meeting was a very enthusiastic one for we feel that a close co-operation with you will greatly aid us in our further de- velopment of the trails and permit us to consider the opening of many new ones over government property for the benefit of those who find such beauty in the views and surroundings of Mount Desert Island.
