THE REPORT OF THE COMMODORE
1959
I am happy to submit to the membership of the Fleet this
brief report dealing with what I believe to be the significant
developments during the 1959 season.
The death of our Secretary, James G. Ducey, in April of
1959, was a deep loss to all the 'membership, and to the
Fleet. Spread on the minutes of the spring, 1959, meeting
of your Executive Committee is this resolution: "The
Executive Committee records with deep sorrow the death
of James G. Ducey, devoted, imaginative and tireless Secre-
tary of the Fleet from 1943 to 1945 and from 1950 to 1959;
Corinthian all his life, teacher and inspiration to the young."
In September of 1959 the Executive Committee established
the James G. Ducey Memorial Fund, the annual income
from which will be used for a purpose determined by the
Executive Committee in consultation with the Ducey family,
keeping in mind the primary needs of the Fleet and the past
interests of James G. Ducey. A few members have already
contributed generously to this fund, and it is my fervent
hope that the rest of the membership will do likewise, SO
that we may better perpetuate the ideals and activities which
he held to be SO important for the continuing development
of the organization and its all important contribution to the
future of Northeast Harbor.
Since the junior sailing program is essential to the vitality
of the Fleet, I am happy to report the most successful season
ever for this activity. The junior membership increased
from 207 to 236, with 25 more children participating in the
sailing class for an all time high of 154. The morning
series saw seven more individual skippers and six more
11
boats racing than ever before. Our six new Mercury Class
boats proved to be the stimulant to the junior program that
had been anticipated. We should not forget, however, that
for the beginners, the Bullseyes still play an extremely im-
portant part, while the Mercurys serve as a challenge for the
older juniors.
Physical improvements planned for completion by the 1960
season include painting of the Fleet Headquarters, rebuilding
the foundation of the flag pole, and a new canvas deck for
the committee boat.
A further revision of the membership and dues structure,
of which you have been notified, liberalizes the provisions of
family membership and should help to increase the members
in this category.
A special word of appreciation should go to Mel Hodder,
our Secretary, who took over ably last summer, to John
Kelly our conscientious and competent Sailing Master, and
to the others on their staff who contributed valuably to a
successful season.
Finally, I should like to express my deep gratitude to
Phil Caughey and to the members of the Executive Commit-
tee, Race Committee and House Committee who generously
gave their time and effort and aided me immeasurably during
the two years that I was privileged to be Commodore. As
indicated in my report last year, The Northeast Harbor Fleet
must be perpetuated within the framework of its traditional
objectives. In this way and in this way only can it continue
to be a fundamental influence in the preservation of the
character of Northeast Harbor as we all love it and want it
to be.
Respectfully submitted,
WILLIAM D'O. LIPPINCOTT,
Commodore

Accountants and Auditors - Management Consultants
Boston, April 18, 1960
To the Executive Board of
The Northeast Harbor Fleet
We have examined the balance sheet of The Northeast
Harbor Fleet as at December 31, 1959, and the related
statement of income, expense and capital for the year ended
December 31, 1959. Our examination was made in accord-
ance with generally accepted auditing standards, and accord-
ingly included such tests of the accounting records and such
other auditing procedures as we considered necessary in the
circumstances.
Plant and equipment accounts are carried on the books
without deduction for depreciation. They do not include
all plant and equipment assets, certain expenditures for such
assets having been charged off against capital expenditure
fund or current income. The investment in Clifton Dock
Corporation is carried on the books at nominal value.
In our opinion, the accompanying balance sheet and state-
ment of income, expense and capital, subject to the qualifi-
cations in the preceding paragraph, present fairly the finan-
cial position of The Northeast Harbor Fleet at December
31, 1959, and the results of its operations for the year then
ended, in conformity with generally accepted accounting
principles applied on a basis consistent with that of the
preceding year.
