Hadeira Northea st Harbor, Me. Dear Sir: Pefore the start of this afternoon's race you asked me if we would withdraw from the Duch Island race. At the time I did not understand your question until a. fter it was too late to answer. I should now like to set the exact facts before you and let you be the judge. As the race did not start untill some two hours after Boat the time agreed upon we had no means of knowing when it would start and SO were not near enough to hear the horn, which Considered seemed to US to be entirely inadequate. Aft r cruiseing round behind the line for some time we noticed that you were all sailing out and decided that it would be best to follow you not a a S no starting signal would be given without your orders. We passed a r r o ss the line ab cut 100 feet outside the bouy when you had a start of several hundred yards on us. Because of this because start and also because of the lateness of the signals it seems failure to to me that we are justified in not withdrawing our boat but if Cross line NORTHEAST HARBOR YACHT RACES 1922 The first meeting of the fleet was held at the Neighborhood House, Northeast Harbor, on Saturday evening, July 29th. Those present were: Messrs. Milliken, Burke, Madeira, 01msted, Dickey, Cochran, Dane and Hayward. Mr. Madeira took the chair and Mr. Hay- ward was appointed secretary. The following matters were discussed: 1. It was decided to add the Baker's Island course to the regular series of courses, to be used and announced from the starting line as usual when weather conditions might permit its use and seem entirely favorable. 2. The time for starting the long races to be sailed on Wednesday was set for 10.15 a.m., announcements descriptive of such races to be sent out by postals. 3. Plans for a three-day cruise were discussed and met with general favor. The cruise as outlined, starting from Northeast Harbor, had as its first day's objective, Seal Cove; for the second day's objective, Blue Hill Harbor and return to Seal Cove; and for the third objective, Northeast Harbor. A tentative date, Saturday August 19th, was fixed for the cruise. 4. Questions of rights of way and fouls were discussed and specific instances of infractions occurring in previous races were cited, illustrated and explained. 5. The possible use of light sails (Spinnakers and Ballooners) for another year. wa.8 discussed and generally disapproved. -2- 6. The introduction of a class of smaller boats (possibly 15-foot knockabouts or dories similar to the present class used at Marblehead and costing about $300.00 to build) was suggested; these boats to be sailed by a younger crew, possibly setting an age limit of fifteen or sixteen. This idea met with general approval and Messrs. Dickey and Olmsted were consequently urged to spread a little favor- able propaganda and ascertain among younger boys if enthusiasm would warrant starting such a class. It was the opinion of the meeting that 11, by the end if the season, the assurance had been obtained to build perhaps four boats for these waters for another year, others would quickly follow and in due course of time this class would become permanently successful, providing an added interest for younger boys as well as affording a nucleus from which to draw valuable material leter for the present established classes. 7. A three hour time limit was decided upon and races not finished within the required time will be resailed the following day. If any boat in either Class A or Class B finishes within three hours of the time of ne first starting gun, the race will count. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned. G. D. The starting gun will be fired promptly at 10.30 A. M., and yacht owners are requested to have their boats present before that time. ENTRIES.-Races will be sailed in the following classes: Class A: Eastern Yacht Club 17 foot class. Class B: North Haven-Isleboro-Bar Harbor 17 foot class. If there are a sufficient number of applicants, the Com- mittee may establish another class, to be known as Class C, open to all knockabouts and raceabouts of from 15 to 18 feet waterline length which are not included in either Class A or Class B. The races will be sailed boat for boat in each class. Boats are limited to their working sails, that is jibs and mainsails; light sails are not permitted. SCORING.-Each boat finishing a race will be given credit under a system of scoring to be announced later. The scores made by each boat will be computed for the entire season. PROTESTS.-Protests of any sort to be considered by the Committee must be in writing and must be placed in the hands of the Committee before midnight the day following the race in which the alleged foul was committed. RACING RULES.-In any case not covered by these instructions, the Racing Rules of the New York Yacht Club will govern. POSTPONEMENTS.-In - case of inclement weather, the races will be postponed until the next favorable day, and every effort made to notify contestants. Contestants, however, should get in touch with the Committee. The Committee hopes that all will co-operate to make the races a success. In order that there may be the greatest possible number of starters in each race, those who are pre- vented from sailing their boats are requested to obtain sub- stitutes. It is the wish of the Committee that the keen spirit of friendly competition, which has been the tradition of these races in the past, will always be present and that anything to mar the good sportsmanship of the races will be entirely lacking. Two NORTHEAST HARBOR YACHT RACES 1921 The Committee in charge of the Northeast Harbor Yacht Races herewith submits its report for the season of 1921. Races were held twice each week from July 19th to September 2nd, and, in addition, two special races, one around Baker Island and one around Great Duck Island, were sailed. In all, seventeen races were started, of which sixteen finished. Weather conditions were ideal. Not a single race had to be postponed. The contestants this year were divided into three classes: Class A consisting of Eastern Yacht Club 17 footers, Class B of Islesboro-Bar Harbor 17 footers, and Class C of miscellaneous boats of about 17 feet water-line length. There were eleven entries in Class A, six in Class B and four in Class C. A system of scoring for the series of races was introduced, the results of which were: CLASS -First-"Hustla" (Lawrence Dickey). Second-"Ino" (Francis C. Grant, Edward W. Madeira). Third-"Kipper" (Gerrish H. Milliken). Class B-First- (George H. McFadden, II). Second-"Navahoe" (Robert E. L. Johnson). Class C-First-"Waukora" (E. Cortlandt Parker). A table showing the results for the season is attached hereto. The Committee will award suitable pennants to the first, second and third boats in Class A, to the first and second boats in Class B and to the first boat in Class C. Altogether, the season of 1921 was a great success and resulted in many pleasant races. The Committee is gratified that such a keen but friendly spirit of sportmanship was shown, and extends its thanks to the many persons whose interest and participation made possible the success achieved. Great interest has already been shown in the races for next year. Since many of those having boats in Class B and Class C have expressed the desire to obtain boats in Class A, it will be possible to eliminate Class C and lay particular emphasis on Class A. A number of new boats for Class A are to be built during the winter. As there are still available a few second-hand boats and the demand for them is so great, it would be advisable to communicate immediately with the Secretary of the Commit- tee, who has tried to keep in touch with the available boats. In addition, special races will be sailed as follows: Special Baker Island Race, Wednesday, August 16th; Special Duck Island Race, Wednesday, August 23d. ENTRIES.-Races will be sailed in the following classes: Class A : Eastern Yacht Club 17 foot class. Class B: North Haven-Isleboro-Bar Harbor 17 foot class. Class C: Miscellaneous boats. The Committee will not attempt to arrange races for this class, this year. The races will be sailed boat for boat in each class. EQUIPMENT.-Boats must carry an equipment consist- ing of a suitable anchor and line, a compass and one life pre- server for each person on board. CREWS.-There is no limit to the number of persons who may be carried on board during the races. It is the hope of the Committee that boats will be handled as far as possible by ama- teurs only. STARTING LINE.-The starting line extends between two white buoys anchored off the spindle on Gilpatrick's Ledge, Northeast Harbor. STARTS.-Starts will be made as follows Class A: Preparatory signal, 2.25 p. m. Starting signal, 2.30 p. m. Class B : Preparatory signal, 2.30 p. m. Starting signal, 2.35 p. m. The preparatory signal for Class A will be a gun or whistle and a red flag displayed from the Referee's boat. The starting signal for Class A, which is also the preparatory signal for Class B, will be a gun or whistle and a white flag displayed from the Referee's boat. The scores made by each boat will be com- puted for the entire season. Suitable pennants will be awarded in each class. FOULS.-In case one boat fouls another, the boat com- mitting the foul shall immediately withdraw from the race. PROTESTS.-Protests of any sort to be considered by the Committee must be in writing and must be placed in the hands of the Committee before midnight the day following the race in which the alleged foul was committed. RACING RULES.-In any case not covered by these instructions, the Racing Rules of the New York Yacht Club will govern. POSTPONEMENTS.-It case of inclement weather, the races will be postponed until the next favorable day, and every effort made to notify contestants. Contestants, how- ever, should get in touch with the Committee. . . The Committee hopes that all will co-operate to make the races a success. In order that there may be the greatest possible number of starters in each race, those who are prevented from sailing their boats are requested to obtain substitutes. Milliken of Blue Hill Bay and New York, who has entered the major racing game with the schooner Shana, and who has established a Brutal Beast class at the little yacht club on the shores of Blue Hill bay. On Aug. 19 the seventeen-foot class at North East Harbor III cruise along the west side of Mt. Desert and race from Seal Cove to Morgan Cove. Races will be held in Blue Hill Bay the following day, and a number of the Isleboro yachts are expeted to run down Eggmoggin Reach for the regatta. The Blue HIII youngsters are competing for an "Upkeep" Cup under the same con- ditions which prevail in the Eastern junior competition at Marblehead, the prize going to the girl or boy whose boat shows the best care at the end of the season. Log for the Cruise of the Northeast Hatbor yacht Fleet - august 19 - 1922 - The three day cluise to Seal Cove and Blue Hill was started this morning from the usual starting pount, off Gilpalticks Ledge, at 11 AM. in a fresh soult westerly Greeze - at the culrance to Bass Harbor the wind strengthened considerably and under a full whole sail Greeze the boats rounded the point at Seal Cove and came to auchor at 110 PM . Bain - arriving on shore a duty roster was quickly formed under the able management of 1st Seigt Walson which so facillilated matters that in a very short line all members of crews were putting away an exTremely good and bounteous meal. 2. To the Northeast Harbor Village Improvement Society: The Regatta Committee hereby submits a report of its activities during the past year. The Regatta Committee is a self- appointed, self- perpetuating committee which foreseveral years past has organ- ized and managed the yacht races at Northeast Harbor. The Committee in submitting this report to the Village Improvement Society does not surrender any of its rights or powers, but it does feel that, inasmuch as it in some degree contributes to the interests at Northeast Harbor, it ought to coordinate its activities with those of the Village Improvement Society. There has been a certain amount of yacht racing at Northeast Harbor for a considerable number of years. In 1920, however, the racing was more definiately organized under the Regatta Committee, and since that time, races have been held regularly twice each week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. At first, the races were all for boats of from 15 to 18 feet water line length, but gradually classes have been organized until now there are two classes, Class A and Class B, each consisting of boats of the same identical design. These boats race twice each week. Great interest is shown in the races and a large number of persone come out to watch them. From the point of view of the Regatta Committee, the races are very successful, and are distinctly an asset to Northeast Harbor. The Regatta Committee hopes that the Village Improve- ment Society will see fit to endorse its work, in order that the races may become a recognized part of the life of Northeast Harbor. Respectfully submitted, Chairman. 1 THE NORTHEAST HARBOR FLEET 1922 The Regatta Committee of the Northeast Harbor Fleet herewith presents its report for the season of 1922. Races were held regularly on Tuesdays and Fridays during the period from July 18th to September 1st. In addition, two all-day races were sailed, one around Baker Island and one around Great Duck Island. In all, sixteen races were sailed, and all but one of them were finished within the time limit. The weather conditions were not as good as last year, as the breezes were light and fluky, and one race had to be postponed because of fog. A new departure this year was the three-day cruise from Northeast Harbor to East Blue Hill, in which nine yachts par- ticipated. The Fleet left Northeast Harbor on the morning of August 19th and raced to Seal Cove, where headquarters were established at the camp of Mr. Louis C. Madeira. On the morning of the 20th, the Fleet raced from Seal Cove to East Blue Hill, where it was the guest of Dr. Seth M. Milliken and the Kollegiwidgwok Yacht Club at a very pleasant luncheon. After luncheon, the Fleet raced back to Seal Cove. On the 21st, the Fleet returned to Northeast Harbor. The cruise was a great success in every way, and is to be made an annual event. The Committee feels that the season was most successful. It realizes that the success was due to the keen sportsmanship and friendly interest of the contestants, without which the races would not have been possible. The Fleet this year showed an increased knowledge of the racing rules, and although occasional fouls were committed they were due only to excitement or over- anxiety at the moment. The Committee on the whole is deeply gratified with the success of the season, and extends its thanks to all those who gave their co-operation in any way. The interest shown in the races has caused the Committee to establish a new class for 1923. After much discussion, the Committee selected the "O" Class boat adopted at Marblehead, which has already proved its good qualities. A number of per- sons have definitely decided to purchase boats and everything indicates that this new class will be as popular next year as the established classes. A circular describing this new class will appear in a short time. In discussing the races for next year, the Committee has found that there is considerable sentiment in favor of using light sails-spinnakers and ballooners-in Class A and Class B. Such sails, made of the best material, with bags for each sail included, will cost $58 (spinnakers, $28; ballooners, $30). Spinnaker poles will cost not more than $10. A number of yacht owners have stated their desire to see these light sails adopted and consider that the cost is amply justified by the improvement in the sport and the increased enjoyment from the races. The Committee is anxious to carry out the wishes of the yacht owners and for that reason asks that you state your answer to this question: Under these circumstances do you desire that spinnakers and ballooners be adopted for Class A and Class B? The Committee will be guided in its action by your answer to this question. Please write to the chairman of the Committee stating your views. There are several additional changes which will be adopted next year. As usual, the races will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays from the third Tuesday in July until the Friday pre- ceding Labor Day, but the only races which will count for the season's standing will be those from the first race in August until the race before Labor Day. Trophies, as well as the usual prize pennants, will be awarded the winners in this series, and trophies may be awarded for the races sailed in July. New courses have been laid out which will be sailed next year. The cruise will be held as it was this year, and efforts are being made to have a joint race between the Islesboro Fleet and the North- east Harbor "B" boats. The Committee at all times is ready to do anything to fur- ther the interest of yacht racing at Northeast Harbor, and will be glad to assist you in any way. THE NORTHEAST HARBOR FLEET ONE DESIGN "O" CLASS KNOCKABOUTS FOR 1923 Owing to the increased enthusiasm at Northeast Harbor for yacht racing, the Regatta Committee has decided to adopt for 1923, in addition to the present classes, a new one-design class of smaller boats. Already several of these boats have been spoken for, and the Com- mittee believes that others will join SO that the success of the class is assured. The Committee after a thorough investigation, selected the "O" class boat, the plans of which are described herein. These plans were chosen last year by syndicates first from Mar- blehead and later from Cohasset and Buzzards Bay for a one-design class where permanency and quality were the chief considerations. Boats built from these plans proved successful in every way, being both fast and seaworthy. In Buzzards Bay where the prevailing summer winds are very much stronger than at Northeast Harbor, these boats racing throughout the summer had to be reefed on only one day and then they were sailed under single reefs while larger boats carried double reef mainsails and storm jibs. The Committee calls special attention to the following: 1. Boats are especially suitable for Northeast Harbor weather and sea conditions and are easily managed. 2. With the forward air compartment they cannot sink. 3. They are to be well built and will have a permanent value. 4. The cost of maintenance and upkeep will be small. THE NORTHEAST HARBOR FLEET 1922 In October last, circulars were issued announcing the establishment for 1923 of a new class of small knockabouts for Northeast Barbor. The announcement was cordially received and twelve boats have already been ordered, one for use at East Blue Hill and eleven for use at Northeast Harbor. Those who have ordered boats are Mr. C. F. C. Stout Mrs. M. E. Olmsted Mrs. C. B. Fraley Dr. Edward L. Keyes Mr. E. S. Burke, Jr. (two boats) Mr. Percy H. Clark Mr. Henry B. Thompson Mrs. W. A. M. Burden Dr. Seth M. Milliken Mr. G. Davenport Hayward and Mr.Edward W.Madeira. The Class is, therefore, an assured fact, and there is in addition the possibility of inter-club races between North- east Harbor and East Blue Hill. Under these circumstances the Committee wishes once more to call attention to the fact that these boats may still be ordered for delivery in July, 1923. The boats are small knockabouts that have proved themselves in wind and sea - 18 feet over all and 15 feet on the water line. The price is $575.
