REPORT OF THE COMMODORE
1957
It is a great pleasure for me to report once again on a
season as Commodore of the Fleet. Overall, 1957 was a
good year, and although the statistics indicate a dropping off
of activity in some areas, this fact is more than compen-
sated by increases in others. The Fleet is in a healthy con-
dition, and the interest and enthusiasm of young and old
alike is great. There are some problems that are being dealt
with by the Executive Committee, which will be touched
upon in this report, but they in no way weaken the overall
strength of our organization.
Financially the Fleet did better in 1957 than it has done
in the past four or five years. We have been operating for
some time with a small annual deficit which has been cov-
ered by drawing from our savings account. In spite of the
fact that the 1957 deficit was less than the previous ones,
the Executive Committee is working on a program to in-
crease revenue and to put us on a more sound financial
basis. On the bright side of our statistical picture the num-
ber of Fleet members reached an all-time high in 1957 with
the total number reaching 549.
The racing during the past season has been enthusiastic
and well supported. Although the participation in Series
Races dropped off from the previous year, the numbers
taking part in special races increased considerably. The
large number of boats entered in the July and August Cruises
was likewise an encouraging indication of interest in racing.
There is no doubt that the decreased participation of the
"A" Class in the Series Racing, and special races as well, has
hurt the Fleet greatly in respect to the number of people
11
and boats taking part in the races. Several meetings were
held last summer to see what could be done to encourage
more "A" boats to take part. Some good suggestions were
made and the Fleet is encouraging the revival of participa-
tion of the "A" boats. Before leaving the subject of racing,
it should be stated that this year's August Cruise was one
of the best in my memory. From the point of view of
weather, numbers, and keenness of competition, it was a
highly successful four-days, and on the strength of this
success it has been decided to follow the same itinerary in
1958.
Certainly one of the most important aspects of the Fleet's
operation is its Junior Program. From 9 in the morning
until 6 at night the children are around the dock six days
a week all summer. To provide for their proper supervision
and for endless other odd jobs, a group of boys and a sail-
ing master are retained. This year we had the finest staff
we have ever had. Under the leadership of Melville Hodder
the boys handled the dock, the sailing class, the morning
races, and many other assignments with perseverance, skill
and good humor. We are all obliged to Jack Lapsley,
Charlie Woodard, Eliot Scull, and Sandy Kennedy for their
good work, and we are happy that most of them will be
back with us another year.
Participation in the Sailing Class remained at an extremely
high level with a total of 132 children in it at one time or
another. The Junior Group, which is confined principally
to rowing, was under the guidance of a number of capable
young ladies to whom we are indebted for their services.
One innovation in the Junior Program was the sailing of a
series of races to determine the Fleet Junior Champion.
Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Kennedy generously presented a trophy
12
for the Championship in memory of their daughter Peggy.
Happily the winner of this trophy and the outstanding
junior sailor of the summer was Sandy Kennedy. Ten
skippers and crews took part in the Junior Championship
and a day of highly competitive, well sailed races resulted.
Another new trophy, the Robbins Bowl, was given to the
Fleet during the summer in memory of the late Reginald C.
Robbins, who was for many years a leading skipper of the
A Class. Under the leadership of Dr. Michael Crofoot, a
number of former competitors and companions of Mr. Rob-
bins contributed to the purchase of this beautiful bowl,
which is to be a perpetual trophy for the Luders Class on
the August Cruise.
As usual, the Fleet depended for the success of the past
season on many different people. Each year members loan
their Bullseyes and rowboats to the Sailing Class and without
this generosity the class could not exist. Contributions
were received from the owners of several power boats that
follow the races. Other members very kindly sponsored
teas following the August Saturday races. Mrs. William
Cochran, Jr. presented the Fleet with two new starting
canon. All of us are grateful for the outstanding services
performed by our Secretary, James Ducey, who has admin-
istered the Fleet's affairs and organized our activities with
his customary ability and thoroughness. We are also in-
debted to Phil Caughey and Marion Salisbury for their
efficient and courteous work in the Fleet office. There are
many others who contributed to the success of the 1957
season and I am grateful to them all.
Respectfully submitted,
WILLIAM J. STRAWBRIDGE,
Commodore

Accountants and Auditors - Management Consultants
Boston, February 11, 1958
To the Executive Committee of
The Northeast Harbor Fleet
We have examined the balance sheet of The Northeast
Harbor Fleet as at December 31, 1957, and the related state-
ments of income, expense and capital for the years ended
December 31, 1957 and 1956. Our examination was made
in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards,
and accordingly included such tests of the accounting records
and such other auditing procedures as we considered neces-
sary in the circumstances.
Plant and equipment accounts are carried on the books
without deduction for depreciation. They do not include
all plant and equipment assets, certain expenditures for such
assets having been charged off against capital expenditure
fund or current income. The investment in Clifton Dock
Corporation is carried on the books at nominal value.
In our opinion, the accompanying balance sheet and com-
parative statement of income, expense and capital, subject
to the qualifications in the preceding paragraph, present
fairly the financial position of The Northeast Harbor Fleet
at December 31, 1957, and the results of its operations for
the years ended December 31, 1957 and 1956, in conformity
with generally accepted accounting principles applied each
year on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year.
