Historical Context
Settled in 1636, incorporated as a town in 1641, and as a city in 1852. Named in honor of William Pynchon (1590-1662), leader of the Colony, whose name was in Springfield, Essex County, England. Before 1641, it was common land called Agawam (MA-T1/p44).
