EARTHBEAT
A BENEFIT CONCERT FOR ALLIED WHALE
Tuesday, July 5, 1988

Mt. Desert Island High School
A BRIEF HISTORY OF
ALLIED
ALLIED WHALE
Allied Whale was founded in 1972 by Dr. Steven K.
Katona, Professor of Biology, and students and staff of
the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. Since its
beginning, Allied Whale has been at the forefront of
modern whale research. Some of the techniques
developed here for use in the study of whales have been
adopted as standard practice by whale biologists world
wide.
In 1973, with the cooperation of the US Coast
Guard, Allied Whale opened a research facility at Mt.
COLLEGE OF THE ATLANTIC BAR HARBOR 04609
Desert Rock, Maine. "The Rock", a 3 1/2 acre island
nearly 25 miles off shore, is now the oldest land-based
WHALE
marine mammal research facility on the east coast.
Research includes daily censuses of the various whale species, the photo-identification of
individuals and studies of the behavior and respiration of whales. Inventories of migratory land
birds, seabirds, seals and invertebrates also take place at Mt. Desert Rock.
Researchers at Allied Whale have been instrumental in the development and
implementation of the techniques involved in the photo-identification of individual whales. By
using these methods, a whale can be reidentified in different locations and at different times
over the course of its life without the use of invasive tags. Allied Whale is the curating facility
for the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog, which now includes photographs of over
3800 individual animals from the Caribbean to Greenland and Iceland, and the Antarctic
Humpback Whale Catalog. The data from this project have provided the best available
information about stock affinities, population size, migratory patterns and life histories of these
endangered whales.
Similar techniques are also used to photo-identify finback whales. Though the second
largest animal on earth, they are an elusive creature about which little is known and they are
still being hunted in the North Atlantic Ocean. In 1985, Allied Whale began curating the
North Atlantic Finback Whale Catalog; it is hoped that this work will begin to yield answers to
the many questions about this poorly understood animal.
All of these projects are collaborative efforts with research organizations throughout the
eastern US and Canada. Allied Whale also assists with the rescue and study of stranded
marine mammals along Maine's rocky coast.
Allied Whale is a research arm of the College of the Atlantic and solicits funding
independently in the form of government and foundation grants or contracts as well as
charitable donations from individuals. Tax deductible contributions can be made to Allied
Whale, College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609. Write or call (207) 288-5644 for
more information about how you can help.
