The 100-acre Cox Protectorate is established.

From collection College of the Atlantic College of the Atlantic Timeline List (Timeline #1)

The 100-acre Cox Protectorate is established.

The Cox protectorate was established in 2010. Comprised of 101 acres of protected forest in the Northeast Creek Watershed area, the protectorate hosts 10 mammal species and over 30 species of bird. The land was formerly owned by Thomas Arthur Cox, a former trustee of COA. His donation of the protectorate to the school was in the hopes that the land be used for conservation and education purposes, remaining largely undeveloped for use as an ‘open air classroom.’ And indeed, the protectorate serves as a valuable educational asset to the college, providing a base for instruction, research and conservation.
