From collection College of the Atlantic College of the Atlantic Timeline List (Timeline #1)

The Kathryn W. Davis village and Deering Common buildings were completed in 2008. The Village, COA’s second resident housing project, is also the college’s ‘greenest.’ Each house is heated by a biomass pellet boiler and equipped with composting toilets. Each of the six houses is designed to encourage communal living practices, with the living room, dining room and kitchen on the ground floor. The village is named after philanthropist Kathryn W. Davis. Deering Commons design, too, had community building in mind. The building contains a student lounge, meditation room and cafe as well as nursing and mental health counseling offices. Like the village houses, it is heated by a pellet boiler system, contains recycled newsprint insulation and is fitted with composting toilets.
