COA’s first endowed chair position, the Newlin Chair in Botany, was created in 1999. Named after Elizabeth Battles Newlin, longtime MDI resident, avid gardener and supporter of COA, the endowed chair position acknowledges faculty who make contributions to the school in the field of botany. Professor Craig Greene, who planted many of the trees in COA’s arboretum, was the first to be named to the chair. His efforts to bring native and unusual trees to campus have resulted in the verdant campus we know today.
