City of Worcester, MA. Located 40 mi W of Boston (US-T121). It was settled in 1673, incorporated as a town in 1722, and as a city in 1848. The name was suggested by General Daniel Gookin (1612-1687) as a gesture of defiance toward Charles II who had received a crushing defeat at the Battle of Worcester, England, 1651. Before 1684, it was known as the plantation called Quansigamond (MA-T1/p52).
