City of Cambridge
Details
A portion of what is now Cambridge was called Newtowne until 1638 and then Old Cambridge. It was named after Cambridge, England, because the Massachusetts General Court establish a college there and most of the clergymen were graduates of Cambridge University. Cambridge became a city in 1846, uniting three rival villages--Old Cambridge, Cambridgeport, and East Cambridge.
