Canon Brook Trail, Acadia National Park Hancock County,ME

A very early VIA path that was improved and endowed by the BHVIA in the 1920s.  The long path extends around south ridge of Dorr Mountain and ascends steep open ledges on east face of Cadillac Mountain.   At the eastern end, parking accommodations required a 1965 reroute, utilizing a 1941 graveled road, abandoning the eastern end (#333) of the Canon Brook Trail.  The route passes unmarked trails (#s 341, 333, 332), the southern end of the Dorr South Ridge Trail (#21), and the A. Murray Young Path (#25) at confluence of Canon Brook and Otter Creek west branch.  Ascends by long sections of BHVIA stepping stones, stone paving, and stairs.  Stonework blends into setting exceptionally well.  Traverses Canon Brook several times; stonework winds in and out of brook, and in spots, water flows over stones.  Route also climbs steep open granite ledges marked by blue blazes.  Presently, trail terminates at Cadillac Mtn South Ridge Trail (#26) near the Featherbed.  Former Path continued to the Pond Trail (#20) after crossing the Boyd Road (#449).  Level graded woodland sections were a suggested bridle path by BHVIA.  Many gravel-covered log bridges were replaced with bog or planked bridges (1980-1998). George Dorr claimed the eastern end was once part of a Native American carry route to Otter Creek.

Details

This path may have been part of a pre-1760 Native American cross- island path from Bar Harbor to Otter Cove to avoid circumnavigating the island by the rough coastal waters around Otter Point.  Scant documentation is found in Dorr's personal manuscripts (ANP Archives, shelf 5, box 2).  An east to west connector path which at some point becomes one of the BHVIA endowed paths (as stated in the 1938 BHVIA 47th Annual Report).Shown and labelled on the 1896 path map as the "Canon Path."  Route is shown as from Route 3 across from the Green and Black Path, west to the southeast side of Pemetic Mountain, ending at the Bubble Pond Path.  The eastern end of the trail is no longer marked, refer to trail #333.Description from the 1897 BHVIA 8th An. Rpt which references the path, "A new path has also been run over the southern slope of Dry Mountain which connects with the path running from the Green Mountain gorge to the Otter Creek road and which comes into the road just beyond the Newport gorge.  This latter path down the eastern slope of Dry is quite steep and need to to be followed with caution.  There is also a new path which leaves Seal Harbor Road just where Otter Creek brook crosses it and runs up the bed of the brook to the Dry mountain path, this is an extemely picturesque walk and runs through a very attractive country.  One can take this path and turning right about a quarter mile from the road, go up over Dry or turning to the left go through a short stretch of woods and over the long slope of Green, making an all day walk."The following describes the current eastern end of the Canon Brook Trail, however, historically this was a different trail.  "A foot path has also been opened up through the woods by this commiteee, from the Otter Creek Gorge to near the commencement of the new road built by the town at Otter Creek last year, a distance of from two and a half to three miles in length, and running on the western side of the watershed to the creek, where remarkabley level grade can be obtained througout, an its is hoped that, with the consent of the owners of the woodlands that it passes through, and the support of those interested in horseback riding, that an easy and atrractive bridle path, the only one in that area seems at present to offer itself in the neighborhood of Bar Harbor, may erelong be built."The 1900 BHVIA 11th An. Rpt states, "A few of the new paths still require considerable work to be done on them, ... the Canyon path up the eastern slope of the southern ridge of Green Mountain." (Note:  this could possibly refer to trail #350.)The 1901 BHVIA 12th An. Rpt. states, "A new path has been laid out from the road in the Gorge, near the base of Picket Mountain, to the Dry Mountain Path back of Otter Creek."  This description may refer to the current east end of the Canon Brook Trail see trail #333 for original east end of the trail.Described in the 1919 BHVIA 30th An Rpt as the "Canon Brook Trail."The 1924 Annual Report of the Path Committee, printed in the newspaper, states "The last part of the Canon Brook Path has been changed so that the path emerges from the woods into a field on the Otter Creek Road instead of directly into the road.  All these changes have been well marked and should not be hard to follow....The following new work has been planned for the coming year...the continuation of the Gorge Trail south between Green and Dry Mountains to join the Canon Brook Path.  This will add to the many beautiful trails in the Bar Harbor District. The 1938 BHVIA 47th An. Rpt. states "The Canyon Brook Path has an annual income of $50.  This year it was necessary to spend $60, but there is an accummulated balance on hand of $95.12."
