101. 164. On March 21, 1876, a tremendous gale swept over Egg Rock, washing away the boat and bell houses. In the repair work the bell tower was moved No. 22 thirty feet towards the middle of the tiny island. In the living house two windows were broken and there were two and a half feet of water on the kitchen floor. 165. The January 3, 1942 edition of the Bangor Daily News published a story from the November 7, 1914 edition of the Bar Harbor Times headed "German Wireless Reported Here." It seems that the British Foreign Office had been attempting for some time to locate a secret wireless "in the Maine woods!! which constantly reported dispatches describing the war conditions in Europe, in every instance telling of achievements of the Kaiser's army from twenty- four hours to several days in advance of the official information given out of London, Paris and Petrograd. Invariably, so it said, the official statements from the Allied capitals substantiated the stories which a staff man, located at the site of the secret wireless, was sending his paper in New York, For a week or more these dispatches were sent from Bar Harbor, then from Eastport, Ellsworth, Bangor and Lewiston, in each instance the sender returning to Bar Harbor. It is these facts that led those who knew about it to feel confident that the wireless station which caused the British and French ambassadors so much worry was located in Bar Harbor. It was believed to be at a summer residence here whose owner was very intimate with Captain Polack of the German liner, KRONPRINZESSIN CECILE, during her stay in our harbor. 166.
