"Little Long Pond was uncommon [name] until the 1980s, when it came into common usage to distinguish it from Long Pond on the west side of Mount Desert Island. It subsequently has become common, although Long Pond--without the diminutive--is probably closer to the proper name" (Raup, Henry A. Place Names of Mount Desert Island and the Cranberry Isles [Mount Desert Island Historical Society, 2021]. p. 314). Recorded as Long Pond by U.S. Geographic Names Information System, but an exception is made in this case to use the common usage because it is so prevelant in the early 21st century.
