Blackwoods Campground is located on 160 acres west of the village of Otter Creek, along the eastern coast of Mount Desert Island. Blackwoods is an early automobile campground, adjacent to but not contiguous with the Blackwoods segment of Acadia National Park's historic motor road system. Design for the campground was based on the non-destructive system proposed in A Camp Ground Policy by E. P. Meinecke in 1932. Actual construction of thecampground by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began in 1936. Due to theambitious nature of the Blackwoods Campground program, only one of three planned loopswas completed before World War II.
