Argyle Township (unorganized), Penobscot County, ME
Bounded by towns of LaGrange, Edinburg, Greenbush, Old Town, and Alton, Argyle is an unorganized territory that was formerly a plantation and a town. Penobscot Indian Territory is just to the north. European settlement began in 1810. Town of Arglye "set off from Argyle Plantation and incorporated March 19, 1839 the 346th town. Part set off to Old Town March 22 1843. Part set off to form Acton March 9, 1844" (Atwood, Stanley Bearce. The Length and Breadth of Maine [Kennebec Journal Print Shop, Augusta, Maine. 1946]). A portion is also a populated area.
