General Note
A "township" in Maine is a defined geographic area with no local government that lies within the state’s unorganized territories. State government handles taxation and most services within these 420+ minor civil divisions, which encompass more than half of the area of the state. Some sources group the townships into larger divisions; each grouping labeled as an "Unorganized Territory" (abbreviated, "UT").
