Great Cave Path Acadia National Park, Hancock County, ME
Path begins shortly after major scramble over boulder field at lower branch of Precipice trail - veers left just after second big boulder on marked trail (immediately to the right rising just above marked trail is a mysterious set of small steps that lead nowhere). Path then climbs alongside bottom rising cliff face (tread is rock rubble and organic material), then up somewhat steep path of soil and small loose rocks (heavy erosion – the direction of path towards cave mostly clear because of foot traffic). First highly constructed features are granite slab laid steps right under caves. Steps appear to lead visitors to view the caves, then after doubling back, path cuts left up over granite ledges and around into more wooded terrain ascent. Several long stretches of steep narrow steps (a little over 1’ wide – decent condition) eventually lead to two stone step bridges that cross steep ledges. Bridges are held by iron bars and meet current Precipice Trail at level area beneath cliffs where major iron ladder section begins. SB, MB
