Canada Cliffs Trail, Acadia National Park, Hancock County, ME

A moderately easy and seldom used ledge, bogwalk and woodland trail with 3-4' wide tread. Trail is loop with one leg along cliffs and another in more wooded area - legs rejoin at south end and head west to end at the Valley Trail (#116). Very easy climb with views towards the sound. Bogwalk was installed in 1990 that replaced some older bridges.

Historical Context

The upper section of the trail that is currently marked was part of a trail shown on the 1911 path map. The 1915 path map describes this as Beech Cliff Trail, with the route "From Beech Cliff Road, near Somesville Road, over Canada Cliff to Beech Cliff." This route is shown on the 1916 path mas as trail #27.

Significance

The historic trail system of Acadia National Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its national significance and ties to the history of Mount Desert Island and establishment of the park. The system's period of significance starts in 1844 and ends in 1942. The listing encompasses 109 trails traversing 117 miles on Mount Desert Island (some extending outside the park) and includes 18 memorial plaques, 12 viewpoints, and unique engineering features.
