PROCLAMATION HONORING THE TOWN OF TREMONT, MAINE UPON ITS 150TH YEAR Whereas on June 3, 1848 the Legislature and the Governor of Maine approved the formation of the Town of Tremont out of part of the Town of Mount Desert; and Whereas since long before the formation of Tremont as a separate town its inhabitants worked hard to bring forth the fruits of the land and the sea in their part of Mount Desert Island, and were engaged in fishing, boat building, carpentry, farming, and canning; and Whereas the Town of Tremont includes the villages of Bass Harbor, Bernard, Seal Cove and West Tremont and the community of Gotts Island, and the former village of Centre that is still fondly remembered; and Whereas the inhabitants of the Town of Tremont continue to engage in their traditional work, and to welcome tourists to enjoy the natural beauty of their coast and mountains; and Whereas with a strong sense of their history the people of the Town of Tremont plan to celebrate its sesquicentennial with a week of festivities from July 11 to July 18, 1998; Therefore I, Angus S. King, Jr., Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby Proclaim July 11 to 18, 1998 as Town of Tremont Week and urge the people of the State of Maine to join in the celebrations marking the Sesquicentennial of the Town of Tremont
