Emblem of Spring

Oil on canvas. Painted in May 1822. A copy of an 1812 print by Bertrand, after a picture by Charles Le Mire. Fisher has added his inkwell to the composition and a poem of his own composition. The same inkwell can be seen in all of his self-portraits and is located on the bow-front chest of drawers in the parlor. Fisher's journal describes his work on this painting in 1822: May 9. Spent the forenoon copying a French print, an emblem of spring. May 10. Spent the day painting on Emblem of spring. May 11. [Fisher was busy writing sermons.] May 12. [Busy preaching.] May 13. Exercised with sick headache. P.M. better and painted a little on Emblem of Spring. May 14. A.M. painted. May 15. Painted most of the day on Emblem of Spring and finished it. Value in frame $8.
