Lands which Mr. Dorr has acquired or obligated him-
self to acquire for public reservations.
First: A tract of land, containing approximately 160
acres, lying easterly of the present boundary of the Laf-
ayette National Park and northerly of land of the Sieur de
Monts Spring Company and establishing with lands already
donated by Mr. Dorr from his inherited Old Farm property
(with the exception of the block of land described below
as B, C and D) the intended permanent boundary of the
Lafayette National Park upon its northern side from Green
Mountain ridge and Kebo Brook to Bear Brook at its inter-
section with the Schooner Head Road. This tract is de- -
scribed as follows:
Commencing at the inversection of north line of land
of the Sieur de Monts Spring Company with the Lafayette
National Park and following the line of said Park north-
erly and southwesterly to the old wood road at the foot of
Green Mountain Gorge and thence northerly by said old wood
road, skirting Kebo Brook, to the Kebo Valley Golf Links
opposite the Building of Arts: thence by said Kebo Valley
Golf Links and by Kebo Brook to the Harden Farm Road, and
thence by said Harden Farm Road to its intersection with
Tarn Brook and thence continuously by Tarn Brook on the
eastern side of the Great Meadow to said land of said
Spring Company and thence by said land of said Spring
Company to the point of beginning.
Excepting (A) the Catholic Cemetery Lot, which is en-
closed on all sides, and excepting (B, C & D) a block of
land belonging to the Estate of C. C. Burrill, the Mill-
bridge Land Company, and land formerly of B. F. Young, and
further excepting a parcel of land lying on the western
side of Northern Kebo which Mr. Dorr has already placed in
public reservation for transferance to the Park, and an
adjoining tract to the west of this, conveyed by the Lynde
Estata, at Mr. Dorr's suggestion, to the Trustees of Public
Reservations for inclusion in the National Park.
All trails leading from Bar Harbor to Green Mountain,
except that along its northern ridge entering from the
Eagle Lake Road, pass over this land: all trails leading
from Bar Harbor to the Kebo Mountain Range, to the Green
Mountain Gorge, and to Dry Mountain to the north of Otter
Creek Gorge, pass over this land; and all trails leading
to the Otter Creek Gorge and the Eliot Woods from Bar Har-
bor, together with the northern entrance and the greater
portion of the Sieur de Monts Spring Road pass over this
land.
Mr. Dorr has acquired all the land in the aforesaid
tract, the value of which in my judgment should be placed
at not less than $50,000. and has paid for the same with
the exception of two undischarged mortgages, as follows:
Mortgage given by Mr. Dorr to Samuel W. Bates upon a
lot of about six scres adjoining Kebo Brook, dated September
16, 1916, recorded Sept. 27, 1916, in Vol. 530, Paid 116,
to secure $750. in five years. I understand that no pay-
ment has been made on the principal but that interest for
two years has been adjusted.
Mortgage given by Mr. Dorr to Luther A. Leach upon a
lot of 25,000 square feet adjoining the Harden Farm Road,
dated July 13, 1915, to secure $500., on or before three
years, recorded Aug. 10, 1915, in Vol. 516, Page 330, of
the Registry of Deeds. I understand that no payment on
account of either principal or interest has been made on
this mortgage.
Second: A certain tract or parcel of land secured to
give entrance from the northern side to an intended system
of bridle paths and foot paths extending from the northern
shore of the island through the National Park lands to
connect with the Eagle Lake and Jordan Pond valleys and
with Somes Sound by the old Southwest Valley wood-road, this
being the only entrance possible on the northern side to the
west of Bar Harbor for such a system.
This tract enters from the road leading from Bar Harbor
to Mount Desert Bridge opposite the junction of the old Cork-
screw Hill county road with the road above the shore along
the bluffs, and following the eastern side of Breakneck Brook
and Breakneck road to the head of this valley.
This lot is bounded on the north by land of the
Stoughton Estate and the county roadleading from Bar Harbor
to Mount Desert Bridge, on the east by the How and Pendleton
lot on Paradise Hill, on the south by Breakneck Road, and on
the west by Hulls Cove Brook; and contains eighty-five acres.
This parcel is held by John A. Peters under a deed from
William M. Roberts, which deed is deposited with the Union
Trust Company of Ellsworth, together with a note signed by
Mr. Dorr, for $13,500, and a letter showing that Mr. Peters
holds the property in trust to secure this note.
I understand this note to have been given on April 18,
1911, interest having been paid by Mr. Dorr to February 19,
1919. The taxes on this lot have also been paid by Mr. Dorr
from that time up to, but not including, the present year.

Mr. John D. Roakefoller, Jr.,
26 Broadway,
New York city.
Dear Mr. Rocke feller:
Thank you for your carofill letter.
Please don't think that I am unsnpreciative of what you have
done. Your contribution is Very much greater than that of anyone
else, 88 your interest in the Park is Beeper and more farseeing.
I as afrnid that in my own sincere enthusiesm I conveyed an
impression of greed which, 83 you know, I-am far from fooling.
After consultation with Dr. Fliot, the committee has decided
to postpone the presentation of the testimonial until next summer,
and to keep open the subscription to the fund through the coming
winter, as fresh names and contributions - some of them from un-
expected sources - continue to come in, and I feel confident that
the total can be materially ingreesed dur ing the intervening
months. A printed letter to this effect revised by Dr. Eliot will
be sent to all the present contributors.
I propose, also, at his suggestion, to send 8 later letter, or
letters, describing in fuller detail the purposes of the Park, and
the fund, as well as to give an Illustrated lecture on the home sub-
joot to the resident population next month.
I shall sea to it that lands to the full value of the money
already in hand is duly conveyed to the Park, and shell send you
later a detailed statement of the extent and boundaries of these
areas.
September 22, 1919.
J.D.R. Jr. 2-
Hoping that you will feel that you can count upon my cooperation
in every way with your ideas in regard to this matter, and that you
will not hesitate to write, or send for the for consultation, whenever
you wish.
Very sincerely yours,
P.S.
Please send the cheques to Dave H. Morris, Creas.

Hon. Franklin K. Lane,
Secretary of the Interior,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Lane:
I enclose a circular which explains itself. The
letter was written by Dr. Eliot, while I have formed the
Committee and done the rest of it.
The community feels that some appreciation and assistance
should be given to Mr. Dorr, and that it should share in the
work of the Park's creation - and this is finely shown by the
enthusiastic response which the Committee is meeting to its
appeal.
We want your name, of course, for the presentation book,
so won't you sign the slip which is to be inserted.
Arn't you and Mrs. Lane planning to visit us ?
We have
been looking forward to your coming all the year, and we feel,
now especially, that you ought to come to inaugurate the new
Park, and present Mr. Dorr with his testimonial.
with kindest regards from Edith and the children.
As always, most sincerely yours,
P.S. of course, Mr. port knows nothing about it. and mustn't
as yet.
Bar Harbor, Me., , Aug. 4, 1919.
Hon. John A. Peters,
House of Representatives,
Washington, D.C.
My dear Mr. Peters:
Thank you very much for letting me use your
name on the Committee which is managing the testimonial for Mr.
Dorr, and for getting Senator Hale to come on.
We are meeting with an enthusiastic and generous responso,
and have already raised over $9000 in the few days in which we
have been at work.
I enclose the circular containing Dr. Eliot's letter and
the names of the Committee, as well as the slip which is to be
signed for insertion in the presentation book. I have, also,
written to Senator Hale thanking him.
Very sincerely,

Dear Mr. Eno:-
In line with our talk yesterday, I should be glad to
have a statement showing all of Mr. Dorr's obligations incurred in
connection with securing the Park lands or maintaining them.
From what you tell me, these obligations will fall into
two classes, those which are unsecured like the several loans in
the banks, and those where money has been borrowed with a view to
purchasing certain specific properties, on which in some cases
mortgages have been given to the landlords. I should be glad to
know the terms on which the mortgages were secured in these several
instances, that is as to when the loans are due, what assurance Mr.
Dorr has given in reference to their payment and all such facts.
The sum of these two classes of loans ought to show the
total amount of money which Mr. Dorr has borrowed in connection with
the completing and carrying on of the Park.
It may be convenient to refer to these different tracts
as A, B and C. In which instance they could be roughly marked on a
path map to accompany the statement.
Very truly,
John

Dear Mr. Rockefeller:
Mr. Dorr, Mr. Lynam and I have been work-
ing steadily ever since I received your letter, to 'furnish you
the information for which you have asked. This work has
necessitated an examination of deeds and other documents, which
has taken us longer than I had at first anticipated. We hope,
however, to have this information for you shortly and shell send
it to you as soon 8.9 it is ready.
I am sorry to learn that you have been ill; but Dr. Eliot
kindly placed his carriage at the disposal of Governor Bartlett
and myself, who drove over your beautiful reeds dea before yes-
terday.
Very sincerely yours,

Hon. Frederick Hale,
Senate Chamber,
Washington, D.C.
My dear Senator Hale:
Thank you very much for allowing me to
place your name on the Committee which is getting up the
testimonial to Mr. Dorr. Everyone, both resident and non-
resident, is most enthusiastic in their assistance, and feels
that it is eminently fitting that the community should, not
only. show its appreciation of Mr. Dorr's splendia achievement,
but should, also, contribute its share to the Park.
I am enclosing the circular containing Dr. Eliot's letter
and the names of the Committee which we have been using, and
a slip to be signed for insertion in the book of signatures.
We are not asking anyone for specific amounts, but we are
urging as great generosity as possible.
Very sincerely,

Dear Mr. Kino:
May I frankly say the t I think it would not be wise,
in making your report to the subscribers, to include a plan of
- the londs purchased of Mr. Dorr.
There are still three pieces of land included within the
tract purchased still privately held, which are important to
secure for the park, whose owners ought not to have that fact
put so plainly before them. Again, there are always some who
are ready to cry down the value of property and unable to re-
cognize its possibilities in relation to any larger plan. If
you give at this stage exact boundaries and figures you expose
the whole situation to attack. Would it not, therefore, be
better to simply state that the new purchase, taken in relation
to who t has been previously secured through Mr. Dorr, establishes
-
a permanent boundary to the park and secures for it a splended
approach.

Dear Mr. Lynam:
Mr. Henry Lane Eno writes to me that the George B. Dorr Trust
Fund has now to its credit in bank "quite a little"over $25,000; that you
have drawn a deed for $25,000 worth of land to be conveyed to the Trustees
of Public Reservations and from them to the Park as soon as the details in
regard to titles are satisfactory to the Government, and that it is now
in order for me to send my check as Treasurer of the Fund for $25,000 to
the order of Mr. Dorr so that you may give it to him as soon as the deed
is delivered.
I am therefore enclosing a check for $25,000, as re-
quested, and beg you to hold it in escrow until the proper time for delivery
arrives.
Kindly confirm the above and acknowledge receipt of check.
Yours very truly,

In.order
to be able to use the check there must be $25.000.
I talk-

We have already quite a little
over $25,000 in the bank and Mr. Harry Lynam has drawn a deed
for $25,000 worth of land to be conveyed to the Trustees of
Public Reservations and from them, as soon as the details in re-
gard to titles are satisfactory to the Government, to the Park.
will you please, therefore, send your check as Treasurer
for $25,000, drawn to the order of Mr. Dorr, so that these funds
can be used by him,as arranged between Mr. Harry Lynam and my-
self, as soon as the deed is delivered.
As always,
Yours,
October 27, 1919.
Mr. Henry Lane Eno,
Princeton, N.J.

Dear Mr. . Eno:
I am sorry that I cannot give you the information you
ask for.
We made out and mailed for Mr. Dorr a good many checks. but
not all of them. When Mr. Dorr left he took the check book with
him and I have no way of making a list of them. He is now in
Washington and his address is Capitol Park Hotel.
I do not recall drawing a check to Mr. Bowditch. I am quite
sure that Mr. Dorr tole me he had done 80. While Mr Dorr has
consulted me with regard to the payment of bills end making the
checks I do not know whether he has paid off all of his accounts
here or not. Shall I ask Mr. Dorr upon his return to give me a
list ?
-
Very truly yours,
