Mr A. H. Lynam,

My dear Mr Lynam,
I write to ask you if you will not have inserted in the
town warrant for me an article to see if the town will build a new
road running from Kebo Street to Spring Street, with its Keho Street
entrance centering along the line between the Livingston and Tangle-
wold property and its Spring Street one along that between Robert
Amory and Nathan Ash and make appropriation therefor. I enclose in
separate envelope a blue print of the plan of it in case it should
be needed and I will mail you tomorrow a copy of Mr Lord's descrip-
tion of it. It is a road that I and others are interested in for
the purpose of obtaining an easier and better approach to the new
but
building for music, that is only one reason among others for its
construction. I have an offer to make the town regarding it of
which I will write you later. I now want to get it inserted
in
season for the annual meeting. As the time is near will you kindly
acknowledge by return mail, and oblige
Yours truly,

Mr. George B. Dor-,
18 Commonwealth, Ave, Boston,
Dear sir:
I bog to acknowledge receipt of your enclosing petition for
new road also Mr. Lord's description of the road.
I havi obtained signatures to the petition and the Selectmen have
issued their notice for a hearing on game for next Saturday, thereby
giving ample time to get the article in the warrant.
will you kindly send me such information 86 may be necessary to
adowince the Selectmen that there is oucasion for this road, that 18
the advantages, etc., to be gained by having such road.

Mr. George D. Dorr,
18 Commonwealth Ave.,
Boston. Mess
My Dear air:
In answer to yours of yesterday I bee tc ER! that the
town at its annual meeting cannot legally vote tc build a new road
unloos the Municipal Officers have first laid out such road. There
mast, first be a potition signad by the Inhabitants or the town pr6-
Bented to the Municipal Officers, and after seven days notice the
Municipal Officers miy lay out the road. They than make a return
of their doings to the Town Clerk. The matter may than be acted upon
at the Town Meeting, R.T. article of course, having bsen inserted in
the warrant.
I have interviewed the selectmen and they are of the opinion
that we will have time to Est the road laie out, and insert and
article in the warrant for the annual meeting.
will you therefore sign the enclosed petition and return it to
us, together with copy of Mr. Lord's description, at your earliest
convenience, and oblige,
Yours very truly,
18 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston.
February 9th, 1906.
Mr A. H. Lynam,
Bar Harbor, Maine.
My dear Mr Lynam,
I return you at once, with my thanks, the petition for
the new road. I had not recollected the necessity for its being
laid out by the Selectmen, with notice given, but I trust that you
will be able to have it inserted in the warrant by them, as you say
there still is time to do. I have signed it myself and I will ask
you to get Mr Leland to sign it also, as he has writtem me that he
will do. For the others, if you will kindly get a few representa-
tive citizens of the town who could not be supposed to have other
than a public interest in the matter to sign it also I shall be
greatly obliged. I enclose Mr Lord's original description of the
road, of which I have kept a copy, I will write you again with
reference to it later on, and come down to the meeting myself the
4th of March.
With thanks again, believe me
Yours sincerely,

its A. II. Lynam,
Bar Harbor, Maine.
My dear Mr Lynam,
My own immediate interest in asking for the road I am
petitioning for at Bar Harbor lies of course in the better and freer
access it will give as an alternative road leading from the town to
our new building for music. But in this I ,am not seeking anything
for personal advantage, but for the public gain, and I do not stand
alone in asking for it but represent the body of subscribers to the
fund by which our building will be built. The building moreover
is not a club from which stockholders will derive any advantage that
will not be shared by all; it is being built simply because of our
conviction that it is needed for the best development of the summer
life, and hence of everything, at Bar Harbor. And as we hope that
the townspeople as well as the summer residents may draw advantage
from it we are anxious to make the access to it as free and easy
as may be possible.
But our building will only occupy two or three acres out of a
large territory which lies close to the town and which it would be
in every sense an advantage to unite with it as closely as is possible,
opening it out as building land to the increase alike of summer
residence and of the taxes that result from it. There are now
plenty of roads running south from Mt Desert Street but there are none
2
that run continuously east and west, between Mt Desert Street and
Cromwell's Harbor Road. This, which is already an inconvenience
is going to become an increasingly serious one as the wide tract
of land between those two develops into town, and a hindrance to
the best development of the land. The road proposed, continued as
it undoubtedly will be
directly or approximately
through
the land formerly belonging to Miss Shannon, to Ledgelawn Avenue will
make a most convenient cross communication through this territory,
connecting closely at its eastern end, or continuing Second South
Street
the one other street from Ledgelawn Avenue to Main Street
and continuing on at its western end by the shortest route obtainable
toward the territory that I speak of, south of School House Hill.
Moreover it is important for the development of taxable property
through what is now a waste and inaccessible outlying corner of
the town. to open up by such a road the land that lies south of the
Malvern Hotel between Kebo Street and Amory's hill; and if it be
not done now when there are no buildings in the way to interfere and
the free consent of all the owners to the road has been obtained
it may become difficult or impossible later on through some new
building or sale of land and this which may become valuable taxable
property remain undeveloped. and a muisance, as it now is, permanently.
Moreover, if the road is in any sense desirable this is a favorable
time for the town to build it since, not only does the way, which
may presently be closed, lie open still, but several gentlemen in-
terested with me are willing to make some contribution toward the
cost of building it that will materially decrease it to the town,
giving it a needed road for less than it could build at any other
time.
Will you kindly present these reasons for me to the selectmen
3
for their consideration, and say whatever further may occur to you
in its support.
With many thanks for your interest in
the matter, believe me
Yours sincerely,
