Title: EIGHTEEN ANNUAL CONCERT
and BALL of the BAR HARBOR FIRE
DEPT. at the CASINO, THURSDAY
EVENING, AUGUST 244, 1911.
Presented by; RUTH ADELE MOORE
KOWALSKI.
(OFFICIAL PROGRAM) - (SOUVENIR)
Date:
SEPTEMBER 1, 1987.
Historical Sketch of the Bar Harbor Fire Department
IF
ROM a very small beginning, when in October, 1881, a few of the prominent residents of Bar
Harbor organized themselves into a fire company known at that time as the Fountain Rodick
Engine Co., No. 1, has grown the present Fire Department of the town of Eden. The
Fountain Rodick Engine Co., No. 1, continued its organization, working under the most trying diffi-
culties, till August, 1888, when many of its members together with new material reorganized under
the name of Mt. Desert Hose Co., No. 1, which organization has constantly been kept up to the pres-
ent time with a full membership of forty members.
In March, 1891, the town at its annual meeting passed by-laws authorizing the organization of a
Hook and Ladder Company. The opportunity was speedily embraced by several progressive citizens
who, April 7, 1901, organized under the name of W. M. Roberts Hook and Ladder Co., with twenty
active members, which together with the Hose Company is recognized by Fire Insurance Co's as the
most proficient volunteer fire company to be found anywhere in the country.
There have been SO many large fires during the past few years that it became apparent to the
residents of the town that Bar Harbor needed a new Engine House and more apparatus, consequently
in March 1911, the town at its annual meeting, voted to build a new Fire Station, which is now
under construction.
The firemen early seeing the necessity of making some provision for rendering aid to any mem-
ber of the company who might be injured or who might contract an illness while performing his duty
at a fire, established a relief fund for that purpose from the proceeds of a benefit ball given October
tenth, eighteen hundred and eighty-eight. This mode of obtaining funds for such a worthy purpose
seemed to appeal to residents and non-residents alike, and has therefore become a well recognized and
approved enterprize. The non-residents have been especially liberal in the purchase of tickets for
these annual benefit balls-the practice being to send each a package of five tickets with a note ex-
plaining the object in view and a request to return such tickets as are not desired. It is a rare thing
to receive the package back. The fund is deposited at the First National Bank and can only be
drawn upon by a majority vote of the joint companies when deemed necessary.
