The Penobscot Marine Museum was
founded in 1936 and is Maine's oldest
maritime museum. Its Searsport
grounds comprise 13 historic
buildings, including ship captains
residences, an early town hall, and a
commercial structure. Eight of the
buildings are on the National Register
of Historic Places, and together they
represent Searsport when it was a
bustling port during the Age of Sail.

MAINE STREETS EXHIBIT 2008
Maine Streets: Selections from the Eastern Illustrating
and Publishing Company
Searsport - The Penobscot Marine
Museum's exhibition "Maine Streets:
Selections from the Eastern Illustrating
and Publishing Company," is currently
on view at the University of Maine's
Raymond H. Fogler Library for the
month of October.
The Eastern Illustrating and Publishing
Company of Belfast, Maine was a
postcard manufacturing firm active
Main Streets: Selections from the Eastern Illustrating and
from 1909 -1947. Founded by Herman
Publishing Company
Cassens of Rockland, Maine, the firm
was, at one point, the largest manufacturer of photo postcards in the United States.
The visual legacy of that company, more than 30,000 original glass plate negatives, now
resides in the photographic archives of the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport,
Maine. The addition of the Eastern Illustrating plates to an already important collection
of photography at the museum has created one of the finest image archives in New
England. The museum has begun processing these images, digitizing them, and making
them available through an on-line database.
This exhibition features remarkable scenes of Main Streets in various communities
throughout the state of Maine. Taken between 1910 and 1940, these images reveal
fascinating glimpses into the architecture, businesses, people, modes of transportation,
and way of life in Maine during the first half of the 20th century. Though we are only a
generation or two removed from the scenes depicted, the photos document an era of
great change. For example, numerous images show automobiles sharing the road (often
unpaved, dirt roads) with horses-drawn carriages. Telephone lines and electric wires
begin slicing through the images as well as diverse forms of signs and advertising. These
images, and the photographic archives at the Penobscot Marine Museum, offer a window
into the Main Streets of our past and shed a light on development, change, and
preservation (themes still prevalent today) in many of our communities around the state.
Click Here to watch multimedia slide show featuring Maine state
historian Earle Shettleworth talking about the exhibit, the
collection in general, and working with museum archivist Kevin
Johnson.

Thanks so very much for making this arrangement. I'll find Niles when I arrive. I'd like to get through all the Mount Desert Island

images on this trip. Perchance, could you check to see if there are any images of Ellsworth that show the intersection of Main
and River Streets where the law office of Judge Peters was located?

Ron,
You are on for Monday. I will leave the plates out (same place where you were the last time) and have the file open
on the computer so you can view the rest of the ones that are already scanned. When you arrive, go into the yellow
house which is our admin offices and Niles will let you into the library building. If there any changes please let Niles
know directly. Thanks for helping us spread the word about the collection and what we are doing with
it.

Hi Kevin,
I appreciate your efforts to find someone to provide oversight on Monday but I'll await your reply before making motel
reservations. I can stay at least two to three hours.
I completed the box you set out for me last time: 114979 to 115096. Several days earlier I reviewed 115100
through115218 I also reviewed the digital images 103827 to 103839, 106251 to 106265, and 108176 to 108210,
stopping short of the remaining thirty or so images in the file trhat you set up for me.
If I've exhausted the Bar Harbor and Park glass plates, I'm interested in additional MDI images of Seal Harbor,
Northeast Harbor, and Southwest Harbor in that order.

Ron,
Great news about your book! Are you able to do $10 per image? I don't want to charge you too much but there
is
some time that will go in to getting the images ready. When you send along the list, please let me know what
size you need the files and if they should be in any particular format. Kevin

the University of Massachusetts Press. I need to gather together images to accompany the
narrative. As a result of the research that you were kind enough to permit, I know that Eastern
Illustrating and Publishing Company archived images would be highly suitable.
As a plan of action, would it be agreeable if I sent you a list of what I've identified (e.g. item
114979) as suitable to my purposes. You determine the cumulative cost and get back to me with
a quote. ( I expect that there might be approximately two dozen images.) Assuming that this is
workable, I'll then send you a check for the digitzied images which you can burn onto a disc and
send off to me. Of course the book would appropriately credit the source of each image as per your
preferred acknowledgement standard. Timeframe: by the end of 2009?
Or would you prefer another method?
Looking forward to hearing from you?

Hi Ron,
If you're smart in New Hampshire, you won't let Fair Point take over from Verizon!!! For four months
they tried to tell me I hadn't paid my bill. I had proof that I had paid it at the same time of the month than
when it was Verizon!!!
I've been helping out down on the pier when the cruise ships come in and I'm very tired. I had a
wonderful few days up at Cobscook Bay camping and going by boat to Deer Island from Campobello and
then to Eastport where I visited with an old Bar Harbor guy who now owns a restaurant there. The weather
was perfect - the call of the loons in the middle of the night was thrilling and the stars in the middle of the
night were exceptional.
With the help of my friend, Bob Pennington, I have my slide program of Newfoundland almost ready for a
showing at the Talk and Walk program at the YMCA this winter.
Last Saturday I went to Portland to see my granddaughter, Elizabeth run the half marathon. Then I'll be
meeting Kevin and her at South Station this Friday to go hear live jazz at Cambridge since we missed
Newport this year. All my family will gather at Manchester for a celebration of my birthday later this month.
It will be a very quick trip since I have obligations back here on the pier.
I'm sure you read and heard about the hurricane and all the people being swept and rescued from the
ocean. It was an experience that I hope never to experience again!!!
My best to you both.

Hi Alice,
Got your new address. How are you faring? Sorry to have missed you last month. I hope to be back in early
November for more work in the archives of the Fenton, Chapman attorney offices on Main Street, the old
Deasy & Lynam firm. I had a most productive visit beginning with a FOA carriage ride with Marla, Ruth Colket,
and Ann Rockefeller Roberts to a lunch on the veranda at what remains of the Eyrie. Saw Lance Funderburk
and Ray Strout about securing their images for the Dorr biography, which is now nearing completion of the
chapters sent off to the editor for a first critique. Most time was spent in the dirty basement of Fenton &
Chapman.
Elizabeth and I have had an enjoyable summer with mini-vacations of three or four days each to Gettsburg,
Providence/Bedford, Plymouth/Cape Cod, and most recently Cape Ann--which I grow to appreciate more with
each visit.
Look forward to seeing you ! Kepe in touch!
Ron

While I have many copies of historic images, I would be most interested in reviewing
what you have in your collections for Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Southwest
Harbor with an eye to possible inclusion in the Dorr biography.
I'll be returning to Searsport within a month or so to go over archival material on
David Sears at the research library, arrangements I'll finalize with Cathy Pollari.
Might I make an appointment to meet with you at that time?
Thank you for this consideration !
