NOTE ON THE HOME OF SAMUEL DORR, IN BOSTON.
The early home of my grandfather, Samuel Dorr,
in Boston, where his children of both marriages were
born and the older ones grew up, was by the harbor
front, still at that time a much sought residential
section, convenient to the merchants' warehouses and
offices and pleasant in outlook. One of my father's
earliest recollactions was of raising himself up by
his hands at the nursery window to look out on the
harbor and see the ships come sailing in. That house
his father sold when he was not quite three years old,
removing, for his older children's sake, to Tremont
Street, near the foot of Park Street, a growing center
then of social life. But the harbor front with its
wharfs and shipping and all the movement of a busy
port was at favorite playground of my father and his
comrades as he grew up; and he looked back always on
its memories with great pleasure.
In those days, before railroads or steamboats or
the use of steam power in mills, Boston was a city of
merchants still, whose prosperity was founded on the sea

and who, owning or having an interest in vessels, had
warehouses and counting houses where the ships came in,
on India and other wharves or their neighborhood. The
masts and rigging of the ships gave wonderful oppor-
tunity for climbing, and the cargoes that they brought
from distant ports wore full of stimulus to the imagi-
nation for the boys who played about as the vessels
were unleading.
But the Common opposite the new home on Tremont
Street was a great playground, too, with its broad,
shady malls, ideal in spring for marbles and all
kinds of running games; its rolling grasslands,
From Pond and good winter coasting; its Election
Days band concerts and parades; and the broad Back
Bay beyond for skating.
The house on Tremont Street, facing the Common,
carried with it EL right to pasture, and my father and
his sister were brought up for several years on the
milk of a cow my grandfather kept for them on the
Common. They were among the last, are ordinance pass-
ed by the City ending the privilege in practice, though
the legal right remained, and still remains, inherent
in the property.

3.
In 1822, four years after my grandfather had
retired from the importing business to become presi-
dent of the New England Bank, the Boston Athenaeum
with its book and art collections and reading rooms
moved from its early home on Tremont Street, in a
house built originally by the loyalist rector of
King's Chapel, looking down west on its old burial
ground, to a mansion on Pearl Street, a quiet and
pleasant residential section then, beautified by
stately houses and shade trees, which was given it
by James Perkins, the wealthy merchant, whose home it
had been; and new shares were offered by the corpora-
tion to meet the expense of moving. Samuel Dorr pur-
chased one of these, becoming a proprietor and there-
after took an active interest in its affairs, contrib-
uting to its purchases of books and works of art, and
serving as a trustee in 1826 and 1827. The share he
purchased was No. 179, as carried on the Athenaeum's
books, and has remained in the family continuously
since, passing from him to his son Charles Hazen Dorr,
and from Charlos Hazen Dorr to me, George Bucknam Dorr,
who still retains it.

4.
When the Boston Art Museum was built, in 1870,
on Copley Square, the Athenaeum transferred to it
the main portion of its art collections, prints
apart, and withdrew from the art collecting field,
but till then its art gallery and loan exhibitions
were notable features of the city's cultural life
and had a far-reaching influence on the younger
generation, leading on toward the subsequent great
development of art museums and private art collections
in America.

employments and services of Secretary Rawson. We now present our
readers with a genealogical sketch of his posterity, principally condensed
om the " MEMORIAL OF THE STAWSON FAMILY," recently published.
A word of explanation may the necessary, with regard to the system
of references which
dopted, it being, in some respects, differ-
ent from that employ Memorial. The Roman numeral
prefixed to a name, generation, counting from the first

numbers is made use of, and the same.number is always found attached
to the same individual; thereby preventing all possibility of confusion,
and affording the greatest facility backwards or forwards.]
We have mentioned, in the precedingsumber, that, of the ifive sons
Secretary Rawson, three settled in England. Respecting two of
em, DAVID (born May 6, 1644,) and JOHN, we know nothing. ED-

nowledge is derived from Dr. Walker's " Attempt towards recovering
Account of the Numbers and Sufferings of the Clergy of the Church

REPORT OF THE TREASURER.
291
During the year the balance of the mortgage note given at
the time of the reconstruction of the Society's building has
been paid off and in connection with this announcement it
may be of interest to retrace the history of the estate since
it has been occupied by the Society. In March, 1833, the
Society purchased for the sum of $6,500, from the Provident
Institution for Savings, " the second story of the edifice lately
erected by said Provident Institution in Boston, bounded
westerly on Tremont Street, and southerly on the Chapel
Burying-grounds, together with one half of the attic story of
said building, with a privilege in the entries and stairways."
The purchase was for cash, and was met in part by a special
subscription of $5,000 from sixty-four gentlemen, of whom the
larger number were not members, and in part by the proceeds
of the Treasurer's notes for $1,500. The names of the sub-

Healy and the Dorrs
T
HE late George Bucknam Dorr, who died at Bar Harbor last August at the age
of ninety, had been a proprietor of the Athenium for fifty years. The share that
stood in his name had belonged, before it became his, to his father, Charles Hazen
Dorr, for the forty-nine years preceding 1894. From 1822, when it was issued, to 1844
it belonged to C. H. Dorr's father, Samuel Dorr, a Trustee of the Library and a donor to
its resources.
A portrait of Samuel Dorr, painted by George P. A. Healy, was one of the inherited
possessions of his grandson, George Bucknam Dorr, in whose memory his surviving repre-
sentatives are now presenting it to the Athenxum. Quite apart from its considerable
merit as a work of art, this picture is a most welcome accession, for quite apart from the
immediate uses of the Athenxum as a repository of books, this Library is also a shrine of
associations.
George Dorr himself was a man of wide interests, ranging from philosophy and the
occult, a field in which he was a fellow-worker with William James, to the open spaces
of nature. To his initiative and energy the very existence of the Acadia National Park
on the coast of Maine is largely due. To the end of his days, he identified himself with
this dream come true. Bar Harbor became his residence, but whether there or in Boston,
whether in person or through the Post-Office, he turned naturally and habitually to the
Athenxum for books related to his interests.
No living person can remember the Samuel Dorr of Healy's portrait. The George
Dorr in whose memory it will hang in the Athenxum will remain for some years to come
a distinctive figure remembered by many. In another hundred years, assuming the heav-
ens are not to fall, the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Dorrs who cared for the Athe-
nxum will still be commemorated here. The ivy of memory is a long-lived and hardy
plant. It flourishes in many works of art bequeathed from time to time to the Athenxum,
and is set off throughout our building by the beauties of color constantly renewed in the
flowers that speak alike for a memory and for a living devotion to the Library.
Arms, the Man, and the Book
NDER the heading "Books for Remembrance" there appeared in that excellent
column of "Topics" in a recent issue of the New York Times a few paragraphs re-
lating to a small public library at Warrenton, Virginia. When the "Life and Letters of
Walter H. Page" appeared in 1922, the library received a copy of the book, as a gift, in
memory of a young soldier of World War I. Since that time other single books have been

Dr. Epp:
At present I do not find information about Charles Hazen Dorr, legislator, except that there is buried in
Mt. Auburn Cemetery a person of that name, born August 27, 1821. I do not know his death date or
other particulars, but you could contact the cemetery office for more information.
I did find a listing for Samuel Dorr (1774-1844), father of a Charles H. Dorr (and others) and legislator in
the Mass. House 1819, 1834, and 1835 and in the Senate 1837 and 1838. There is a brief paragraph
about him in an 1849 issue of the NEHGS Register (vol.3, p. 327). Let me know if you want a copy of
this entry; we can provide it for a small fee.
We also are supposed to have a copy of a 1916 U.S. government publication (about the Sieur de Monts
national monument) by George Bucknam Dorr if you do not have it from another source.
I hope that this is helpful. Let me know if you need more information.

To Cornelia Gilder
Nini,
Regarding our conversation at Ventfort Hall, Dorr's grandfather was
Samuel Dorr who was painted by George P.A. Healy,, There is a lengthy
treatment of Healy in the recently published "Greater Journey: Americans
in Paris" by David McCullough. Healy is a fascinating man whom I am
now researching in greater detail. His portrait of Sam Dorr was given to
the Boston Athenaeum as part of Dorr's estate. On his maternal side,
banker and Harvard Treasurer Thomas Wren Ward was painted by
William Page and it is part of the holdings of the Harvard Art Museums.

Dear Mr. Epp,
The Boston Athenaeum does indeed own G. P. A. Healy's portrait of Samuel Dorr. (The Athenaeum's catalogue
ATHENA covers only the library's holdings, not the Art Department's, which is catalogued separately in a database
not yet available on-line). The basic information on Healy's portrait is as follows:
George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894)
Samuel Dorr, ca. 1842
Oil on canvas, 75.9 X 63.8 cm.
Gift of the estate of George Bucknam Dorr, 1945
Our records indicate that the portrait was in the possession of Charles H. Dorr of Boston until 1893, then with
George Bucknam Dorr of Bar Harbor until 1944.
If you would like to order an image of this portrait, please contact Patricia Boulos, Digital Assets Manager, Boston
Athenaeum, at boulos@bostonathenaeum.org .
Please let me know when your biography is published so that we can acquire a copy for the Athenaeum and have
any references to the Dorr portrait for our files. Meanwhile, please let me know if I can be of further help.
Sincerely,
David Dearinger
