8 photographs of the Champlain Society at Mount Desert Island, Me. in 1880. Founded by Charles Eliot and
various classmates from Harvard College, the Champlain Society camped on Mount Desert Island, Me.
during the summers of 1880-1882 to pursue amateur scientific work in the study of natural history. The
images depict views of Mount Desert Island and Somes Sound, Me.; the Champlain Society's tent-site on the
Sound; and various members of the Society, including Charles Eliot and his brother, Samuel A. (Samuel
Atkins) Eliot. The photographs were taken by Marshall Perry Slade and are identified in the hand of Samuel

Subject: RE: Endicott Family Papers
Dear Elaine,
Thank you for processing this request below. I've just returned from
vacation and will post a check to cover the expense this afternoon.
I would also like to formally request permission to cite on one occasion
alone the Thomas Wren Papers. I make no specific reference to
particular manuscripts but merely cite the Thomas Wren Ward Papers,
Massachusetts Historical Society, after stating the following: "The
importance of household gardens is repeatedly expressed in the
surviving manuscripts of Dorr's maternal grandfather, Harvard College
treasurer and renowned banker Thomas Wren Ward (1786-1858)." It
may be that no permission is required under these circumstances.
My essay on "Wild Gardens and Pathways at The Mount: George B
Dorr and the Mount Desert Island influence" will be published later this
year in an anthology of papers presented two years ago. The Edith
Wharton Restoration, Inc. will publish Edith Wharton and the American
Garden.
Wishing you the best for the July 4th holiday.

Dear Mr. Epp,
Thank you for your email. I will place the offsite order and have
the materials delivered to the MHS and held for your visit on
Saturday, 31 May. I will be out of the office from Wednesday, 28
May - Tuesday, 3 June. If you discover that you need any
additional materials from offsite storage, please contact Tracy
Potter, one of our assistant reference librarians, at
tpotter@masshist.org. As long as you contact Tracy by noon on
Thursday that should be sufficient time to have the additional
materials delivered for your use on Saturday.
Best,
