Dear Dr. and Mrs. Epp,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I gratefully acknowledge your gift of $25.
Your gift makes it possible for us to realize our mission through funding programs, exhibits, and collections
care. We are looking forward to offering you more programs and exhibits in 2003. This summer's exhibit at
the Sound School House From Pasture to Pantry: Mount Desert Island's Dairy History is now open. We
reopen the Somesville Museum on June 17 with the very popular exhibit I Came to This Place: The Story of
the Village of Somesville.
Our winter/spring oral history series was a great success. Lobstermen, Merchant Mariners, cooks and
caretakers all told their tales. Look for more programs like these in the fall.
Thank you for supporting us in our efforts to build and effective island-wide organization to preserve, the
history, buildings, and landscapes of MDI.
Sincerely,
Jaylene B. Roths
The
Executive Director

Attached please find scans of five documents related to the 2nd edition of Street, especially regarding the additional chapter on
Lafayette National Park.
There is other correspondence in our archival files about this 2nd edition and when you visit in August you might want to look at it.
These documents pertain to the contract between the publisher and SAE, transfer of rights, letters from William Sawtelle, and other
matters.

Dear Ann,
I knew that you were returning over the weekend and planned to email you Tuesday.
I
appreciate your organization of the Eliot family. I am interested in any notes pertaining
to
the addition of a final chapter on Lafayette National Park added by S.A. Eliot to the earlier
1st edition.
No need to copy the HCTPR Sketch. I have several copies.
The Sieur de Monts material (by Charles Eliot) is worthy of my careful scrutiny. Anything having to
do with the early history of MDI by Champlain Society members interests me.
I have an essay in the distinctive longhand of CWE II about his grandfather's NEH home
but I'd like to compare it with what you have found.
Scanning the above in PDF and then emailing it off to me would be terrific.
Any photographs? The 1881 image of Champlain Society members at Hadlock Brook
which appears in the current issue of the FOA Journal I had never seen. Knocked my socks off!
I very much look forward to meeting you when I visit in early August. How about lunch?
More details later.
All the Best,
Ron

Ron:
I spent some time today looking through the Historical Society's archival material on Charles W. Eliot, etc. Here's what I found that
pertain to your interests:
1. Considerable material (correspondence, notes) related to the revised edition of Streets' history--20 pps. or so.
2. Two booklets about the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations.
3. Brief mention of Sieur de Monts (but not of Pierre Dugua) in the hand-written notes on early explorers of the New England coast.
I plan to take more time to look at all these notes.
4. Nothing so far on the park boundary disputes and just a brief mention of Charles W's memories of his grandfather's NEH home. I'll
look further.
We plan to scan what's been found so far and send the results to you in pdf format. Would that work?
I'll let you know what else I find.

Eliot Family documents
From : Ronald Epp
Thu, Jun 11, 2015 10:18 AM
Subject : Eliot Family documents
To : Tim Garrity
Cc : Maureen Fournier
HI Tim,
What I am trying to determine from the Eliot Family documents is the existence of correspondence, drafts, or reports
from Charles W. Eliot, Samuel Eliot, or C.W.E. II concerning: 1. a new edition of Street's history of MDI;
2. Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations; 3. Charles Eliot on early explorers of the New England coast,
but only if there is mention of Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Monts; and 4. Charles W. Eliot II on matters relating
to his recollections of the N.E. Harbor home of his grandfather but more importantly his
writings about the park boundary disputes that would occupy his attention from 1950-1987.
Note: regarding item 4, I do not need correspondence and interviews
with architect Arthur Shurcliff, "The Boundaries of ANP: August 1950" subsequent boundary
documents from 1976 and 1985. Nor Champlain Society documentation.
Tim, on boundary matters I assume you are aware that CWE II documents
on this issue are not only at Harvard but in the archives of Woodlawn, ANP, and the N.E. Harbor Library. I'm
developing these for an article I hope to have ready for the next issue of Chebacco. I'm also working with Josh Torrance on a
second edition of S.A. Eliot's 1939 "Historical Sketch of the HCTPR" as part of the centennial celebrations.
I've re-read a 1969 letter from CWE II to Robert E. Garrity, Secretary of the HCTPR. A relative?
Maureen has read and edited the entire Dorr manuscript--and so I have every confidence in her
skills in isolating documents relative to my needs. When the copying is completed, please invoice me
for the expense. Given publication schedules, there is urgency to determining whether the MDIHS
collections are useful to my purposes.
I hope to be on MDI in early August,

Just received your May 5th letter to members and was very impressed to see the wide array of activities planned for the
summer. Congratulations on setting up these most diversified series of events.l hope Liz and I can make several of them
as your scheduling becomes more definite.
One matter of note relative to the Spirit of Acadia. Earl Brechlin has agreed to publish the series four articles in the
Islander this summer on the "Founders. I already have the Rockefeller essay from Richardson in hand (VERY well done!)
as well as the delightful Stebbins essay from Anne.
I've finished a script for Jeff Dobbs on Mr. Dorr, my first effort in this format. We are now negotiating revisions. I'm
comfortable using images to supplement language, not the other way around.

Dear Ms. Jeschke:
As a MDIHS member and recent contributor to the "Journal" I am writing to welcome you to your new position
and to make an inquiry.
For the past four years I've been researching the life and times of George B. Dorr (1853-1944) and have
become known about the island for my inquiries and interviews. Jaylene Oths was helpful in the early stages
in encouraging my research into your arhives with special attention directed at the Champlain Society
manuscripts which are in your possession, thanks to Nan Lincoln.
My online research at the Harvard Archives has disclosed the existence of related materials that I do not
believe many (or anyone) on the island are aware of: the Papers of Edward Lothrop Rand (1859-1924) which
contain manuscripts pertaining to Mt. Desert flora and annual reports and celebrations of the Champlain
Society which was founded by President Eliot's son Charles who provided the inspiration for the founding of
the Hancock County Trustees of Public Researcations, the organizational apparatus that resulted in Acadia
National Park.
The Gray Herbarium Library at Harvard University holds these Champlain manuscripts and reports that they
are unaware of their source. In several weeks I hope to examine these manuscripts with an eye to telling the
Champlain Society story more fully, following a re-examination of your files. It occurs to me that the
correlation of these two apparently independent sets of manuscripts might shed some new light on the early
history of MDI.
I'll be on the island in several weeks and vacationing there in mid-September. Perhaps we can meet and see
whether this line of inquiry might fit within one of your public programs.

Dear Patti,
Seasons Greetings! I received last week a copy of the Journal. Well done! I have not carefully read my article
because I've been focused on reading Peter's hefty piece on the railroad
I have discovered that the Abbe Museum has not received the two copies of the journal that were part of our
agreement for your use of their images of Dr. Abbe and the Museum. See the email from October 6th and
others below. I am quite surprised that this arrangement has not been completed since both organizations are
part of the Island Association of Museums; sharing of this sort should be encouraged. Regardless, I stand by
my original offer to pay the cost of honoring the Abbe Museum image release contract. Please send these as
soon as possible since they have informed me that they are excited about receiving them.
On a minor matter, the illustratiuon for George Bucknam Dorr and the list of illustrations has misnamed him
(as "Buckman").
Have a happy new year!

Patti,
Received the following message from Judith Goldstein (SEE BELOW). Looks like we're on our way.
Do you have a target publication date? Will proofs be distributed for author feedback?
By the way, I received a lengthy email from Peter Dow Bachelder introducing himself to me via the
interceeding of ANP Curator Brooke Childrey. I hear he has submitted an article to the MDIHSJournal as well.
He needed more information on Mr. Dorr and the naming process for Cadillac Mountain. Our interests seem
to overlap and I look forward to developing our relationship.
Finally, regarding the citations for the images. The image of Dr. Robert Abbe and the Museum should both be
credited as follows: From the collection of the Abbe Museum, Bar Harbor, Maine.
My photographic agreement with the Abbe Museum requires the use of this specific language. They also
expect to receive two copies of the publication (without charge) in consideration of supplying these images
without a fee.
The image of Dr. Abbe should be simply identified as: Dr. Robert Abbe
The image of the museum (which ever you choose) should be: The Lafayette National Park Museum of the
Stone Age Period.
The image of Mr. Dorr --identified as Park Superintendent George Bucknam Dorr--should be credited to The
William Otis Sawtelle Collections & Research Center, Acadia National Park.
Please keep in touch and let me know if I can be of further help.

Re: MDI Historical Society History Journal
Hello -
Thank you for updating me on your progress. Are you saying that you will have the draft to me by the first of
August? There is no problem with that. A couple of images would be great. I will get back to you on how many
is OK. The past journals have been heavy on citations. In following up on that I find that is what is desired.
I will have to confim the number of pages - Microsoft Word is OK - I work most often with it.
I am not familar with the Society's photo collections but I would recommend checking is with them.
E-mail submission is fine with me if that is easiest for you. If I have any problem opening the document I
could let you know.
I will let you know as soon as I have the answers to the questions I could not answer.
At this time no specific guidelines have been adopted. That is my main focus with the group.
Thank you,
Hello

Dear Patti,
My receipt of the MDIHS newsletter--and its sad news of Jaylene's departure--prompts me to provide you
with a progress report on the ms. that I am developing for your consideration.
The research on the relationship between Mr. Dorr and Dr. Abbe is completed. I've begun the paper for you
and will extract material for the September 14th BHHS/Abbe Museum presentation from it. My plan is to get
a draft to you within two months. Will that timetable still work for you?
In order to shape it to your needs a answers to a couple of questions would help me with structuring the
paper:
a. Ms. Size: Limit on the number of double-spaced 12 point font pages?
b. Use of Images? Preferred or Optional?
C. Citations: How extensive?
As an academic doing archival work it is tempting to go overboard with documentation.
A listing of archival repositories can be referenced through acroymns that specify the folders consulted if
that would work for you; non-archival publications could be treated conventionally. Do you have an
authoritative style manual that you adhere to?
d. Do you prefer an electronic submission to accompany the paper? If so, will MS Word suffice?
6/11/2003
I will be visiting MDI July 9-11 to secure images for the BHHS slide presentation. Do you know much about
the photo collections at MDIHS? It might be useful for me to review them. Aside from this issue, if you think
it would be useful to meet at that time please let me know as soon as possible and we'll arrange it.
With best wishes,

I am preparing a presentation for the Abbe Museum's 75th anniversary celebration in September

Harpers Ferry Center Historical Collection in West Virginia. I've got several article concepts in mind
but need a couple of weeks to sort my way through the documentation that I secured from these
repositories to determine whether it provides sufficient evidence for the arguments that I will be
advancing.
I am preparing a presentation for the Abbe Museum's 75th anniversary celebration in September
which I believe could be rather easily turned into an article. It concerns the evolution of the Abbe
Museum within Lafayette (later Acadia) National Park with a decided focus on the nature of the
relationship between Dr. Abbe and Park Superintendent (and founder) George B. Dorr, a subject that
has not previously been investigated. Their common interests touched MDI residents in diverse ways
from conservation to the arts to village improvement society efforts during the first forty years of the
last century. Do you think your readership would find this of interest? Do you?
Best wishes on your new position! If you ever need another set of editorial eyes, do contact me. I
spent the late 1980's as managing editor of a monthly publication of the Association of College and
Research Libraries.

Re: Research Collections
Yes,
I would be happy to meet with you at some point on the 14th or 15th. I have just returned from
maternity leave and have my 11 week old daughter at work with me. An early morning meeting may
be best as she usually naps from 8 to 10. If not we will work something out.
I would be interested in talking with you about a possible Journal article. We are going through a
major review of the Journal and its purpose. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks. See you in a couple of weeks.

Dear Jaylene,
Last May I was fortunate to make use of the Charles Eliot papers contained in the Champlain
Society resources available in your collections. This was a small component of a biography of
George Dorr that I am preparing.
In the interim I have become a member of the MDIHS. I've written two articles for the FOA
Journal and carried out extensive research on Mr. Dorr at the National Archives and the
Rockefeller Archive Center. These repositories contain documentation that overlaps with
recurring themes in articles published in the MDI History Journal.
I
will be pursuing some of this research when I next visit MDI November 13-15. Might it be
possible for us to meet at that time and explore several themes that might be worthy of your
consideration for the Journal?
Wishing you the very best.

Dear Jaylene,
Thank you for the opportunity to examine the Charles Eliot's
notebooks/papers from the Champlain Society.
Your "assistant" agreed to photocopy several pages for me and
forward them to me in the next couple of weeks.
I was not able to fully explore a couple of the notebooks and would
hope to return for another visit toward the end of summer.
Thank you for your generosity.

I would appreciate your assistance regarding research into the origins of Acadia National
Park, concentrating on personal and professional documents relative to George B. Dorr.
Over the past few years, I've researched much of the available published materials that I
could secure in regional research libraries and through interlibrary transfers. I am aware
of the Dorr documentation in other Mt. Desert Island public libraries, the ANP Office of
the Superintendent, the Library of Congress, the Harvard Archives, and the Rockefeller
Archival Center. I am writing now to inquire into relevant archival material that is part of
the MDIHSM.
I plan to visit Bar Harbor for the ANP Historic Trails Conference in mid-October. Would
it be possible for me to access during that week (October 16, 19th, or 20th) any materials
that appear relevant to my objectives.?
It would be helpful if you could provide some indication of the scope (perhaps in the
common measurements of linear feet) of your holdings relative to Dorr, the Dorr family,
his relationship to J.D. Rockefeller, Jr., Dorr's role in the creation and administration of
what would become Acadia National Park, and the development of the historic trails and
carriage roads. Is some material only available in non-print formats?
As a librarian, I fully realize that such a brief visit might require many visits to mine the
resources available on Mt. Desert Island. I do appreciate any assistance that you might be
able to offer. I look forward to hearing from you.
Most Sincerely,
Ronald H. Epp, Ph.D.
