RE: Reference Query
Dr. Epp,
We have received your email of January 9, 2003. A search of the Frick Art
Reference Library photoarchive retrieved a photograph of the portrait of
Samuel Dorr by George Peter Alexander Healy that was owned by George B.
Dorr. A photograph of the John Singleton Copley portrait that was owned by
George B. Dorr could not be found in the photoarchive, although we do have
its negative. The two paintings were photographed by the Frick Art
Reference Library photographers while on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston, MA, in 1924. The Healy portrait of Samuel Dorr was still on loan
to the Museum of Fine Arts at the time of George B. Dorr's death in 1944.
This is the last location we have on file for the Healy portrait. The only
location we have on file for the Copley painting is the George B. Dorr
Collection of Boston, MA. This information dates back to correspondence
from 1924.
A search of the Frick Art Reference Library correspondence file found two
pieces of correspondence dealing with George B. Dorr. The first is a brief
letter from Dorr to the Library, dated July 30, 1923, giving permission for
his paintings on loan to the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, MA, to be
photographed. The second is a letter, dated March 3, 1924, from the Frick
Art Reference Library to Dorr with a brief description of the Healy and
Copley paintings that were photographed and notification that copies of the
photographs were being sent to him.
Upon request, we will happily send you complimentary photocopies of the
available photograph from the photoarchive and the correspondence.
Since the negatives of the photographs of the Samuel Dorr portrait by Healy
and the portrait of a man by Copley are owned by the Frick Art Reference
Library [FARL negative 1245,1246], there is a choice of a printed black and
white photograph, or a high-resolution black and white digital scan in the
form of a CD-ROM or as an inkjet print on heavyweight glossy paper. The cost
of having a photograph printed is $25.00 plus $3.00 postage and handling.
The price of a digital scan is $15.00 plus $3.00 postage and handling. It is
payable, in advance, by check or money order made out to the Frick Art
Reference Library. For a photograph order, allow up to four weeks for
processing once the order is received. For a digital scan order, allow up to
two weeks for processing once the order is received. The digital scan will
be scanned at 400 dpi and saved in TIF file format. If another resolution
and/or format are required, let us know when you place your order. If you
are planning to publish the image, we ask that the credit line for the
