UAIII.50.x Holdings Availability
Description : ca. 3,720 containers.
Description : Organized in four subdivisions: I. Records of librarian and director of University Libraries
and of operating divisions of the College Library (UAIII.50.5-.9.xx); II. Records of
committees of the Library (UAIII.50.10.xx); III. Records relating to the activities of the
Library (UAIII.50.15.x-.150. IV. Records relating to specific topics or events
(UAIII.50.26.xx-.29.xx).
History notes The University Library consists of all the collections of books in the possession of the
University. It originated in 1638 with books left to the college by John Harvard. The
library system currently consists of over 100 separate facilities, ranging from very small
specialized collections to Widener Library, with its 5 million volumes. Each of the faculties
within the University maintains one or more libraries serving its special constituency. The
largest unit is the Harvard College Library (including Widener) which consists of the
libraries of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Through various organizational
arrangements, an attempt has been made over the years to coordinate the operations of
the many libraries in the University. At certain times, the director of the library has also
been head of the College Library. In 1979, the office of the director of the University
Library was distinctively separated from the duties of the College Library.
Summary Records in subgroup UAIII.50.5 include correspondence, reports, journals, memoranda,
and rules and guides to action of the librarians and directors. Also some records of the
operating divisions, such as the catalogue department, circulation and reference,
resources and acquisitions, order department, processing, special services, business
office, gifts and exchange, editor, and personnel. It includes a few of the records of the
Farnsworth and Poetry rooms, Theatre Collection, and the Fine Arts, Houghton and
Lamont libraries.

Notes on the List of Portraits:
For most individuals, the date of their earliest Harvard degree is noted. This information is useful in
differentiating between individuals with identical names. There has been no attempt to include in this list
comprehensive biographical information, although in some cases additional information has been
included in this list.
Caveat to Researchers
While the vast majority of the images are correctly identified, the file is the work of
many unknown hands. Researchers should consider that the identities of individuals in this
file to be potentially unreliable, and should seek additional confirmation that the person
depicted is correctly identified.

eastern section of the Yard, Emerson contains classrooms, libraries, and lecture halls
for the department of Philosophy. Emerson Hall is also the birthplace of one of the
modern social sciences. Sociology began at Harvard as a branch of moral philosophy.
The pioneer course was given in 1883 by Francis S. Peabody and eventually was named
Social Ethics 1. Consequently, the course expanded into a department and moved into
Emerson Hall.

Reports of the Visiting Committees, 1890-1970. (11 volumes) UAII 10.7.3
History of the sub-sub-subseries Reports of the Visiting Committees: By the late
1880s, the Overseers' Visiting Committee system was in need of reform. As the University
had undergone tremendous growth in the latter half of the 19th century, SO too did the areas
of responsibility and oversight of the Board's various visiting committees. Too often,
however, these committees lacked members with subject expertise, time, or interest to
produce relevant and useful reports. In June 1889, after receiving only eight reports
from
the Board's twenty-four committees, the Committee on Reports and Resolutions
recommended that a special committee be appointed to develop a plan to reorganize
the
structure and reporting system of the visiting committees. * The report of the Special
Committee upon the Reorganization of the Visiting Committees laid out detailed reporting
schedules and requirements for the visiting committees, called for the creation of a larger
number of smaller, subject specific committees, and suggested that committees should meet
at least once a year with faculty or administrative officers in the departments in which they
were appointed to visit. In the fall of 1889, the Board of Overseers revised their bylaws to
implement the Special Committees recommendations. The reorganization of the visiting
committee structure and reporting schedule led to a new physical arrangement of the
visiting committee reports. At a meeting of the Board of Overseers on December 17, 1890,
it was voted to have the Secretary of the Board consecutively number and print the reports
of the various visiting committees after they had been considered by the Board. At a
meeting on May 12, 1909, the Overseers voted to have Visiting Committee reports printed
and published annually in a volume for the use of the Board, as well as the officers of
instruction of the University.
Historical Note: Letter from Kimball Elkins to Sargent Kennedy, October 2, 1969
regarding the history of the Visiting Committees.
Scope and Content of the sub-sub-subseries Reports of the Visiting Committees: This
subseries consists of reports submitted to the Board of Overseers following the formal
reorganization of the visiting committee structure in 1889 up through 1970, which marked
the next major restructuring of the reporting system. The reports, which are written based
on the committees' visits and inspections of their assigned areas, are highly detailed and
well researched. They cover routine and special topics including curriculum, course
offerings, departmental goals, fund raising, instruction, administration, research, student
and faculty morale, facilities, and admissions policies. The reports also include committee
members' candid criticisms, suggestions, and recommendations. Organized and bound into
ten date spans, and thereunder arranged by academic year. For each date span, the reports

Visiting Committee Reports and Responses, 1968-1987. (5 cubic feet in 15 containers)
UAII 200
History of the sub-sub-subseries Visiting Committee Reports and Responses: In 1969,
in the wake of student protests and political upheaval on campus, as well as in response to
alumni demands for a greater voice in University governance, the Board of Overseers
directed its Committee on Committee Assignments to review visiting committee reporting
procedures and the composition of committee membership. In its 1970 report, the
Committee, referred to as the Keppel Committee after its chairman, Francis Keppel,
reaffirmed the important role of visiting committees as the main instrument to keep
Overseers and alumni informed about and involved with the activities of the University;
called for more contact between visiting committees and undergraduates, graduate students,
junior faculty, and staff during the visitation process; required visiting committee chairmen
to present oral reports before the full Board in addition to submitting written reports; and
recommended that committees to visit the College and the Graduate School of Arts and
Sciences be established. In 1971, the Board implemented the Keppel Committee's
recommendations, resulting in what appeared to be a more comprehensive review and
reporting structure. The relief was short-lived, however, as political, social, and economic
events on and off campus continued to produce a tense relationship between alumni and the
University administration. In 1975, in response to growing Overseer dissatisfaction
concerning the Board's role or lack thereof in the governance of the University, the
Executive Committee of the Board created the Committee on the Structure and Function of
the Board of Overseers. The Committee was known as the Gilbert Committee after Helen
Homans Gilbert, who, as President of the Board of Overseers, served as the Committee's
first chair. In 1978, the Committee published its report, which reaffirmed the structure and
respective roles of both the Corporation and the Overseers. In particular, the report called
for a reorganization of the visiting committees, which would strengthen the Overseers' role
of visitation and counsel. Some of the reforms instituted to provide for a more thorough
visitation process included the appointment of better informed visiting committee members,
a greater role for the standing committees in the reporting system, visit follow-up reports,
and more assistance from Office of the Governing Boards staff to help committees improve
the quality of their reports. 1979 marked the first full year the recommendations of the
Gilbert Committee were implemented. Visiting committee reports and the responses of the
units visited are submitted to appropriate standing committees on an established cyclical
schedule. The visiting committee chairman and unit head then meet with their standing
committee, separately or together, to review the report and response and to communicate
any information deemed too confidential for a written report. Standing committees can opt
to bring a visiting committee report to the attention of the full Board of Overseers and/or
the President and Fellows for further discussion. Standing committees also ensure that a
follow-up report is written by the visiting committee or by Office of the Governing Boards
staff, which informs the standing committee of the progress or changes instituted by the
unit visited since the visiting committee report was issued. As part of the visiting committee
follow-up procedure, at the midpoint between visits, the chairman of a visiting committee is
asked by the appropriate standing committee to inquire and report on actions taken by the

Overseers' Standing and Visiting Committees Records Collection, ca.1820-ca.1970.
(Various call numbers)
Scope and Content of the subseries Overseers' Standing and Visiting Committees Records
Collection: This subseries is an artificially created collection consisting of an incomplete
compilation of reprints of Overseers' standing and visiting committees reports and some related
papers from ca. 1820 to ca. 1970. It is important to note that most of the material in this subseries
is a duplication of reports found in the sub-sub-subseries: Reports to the Overseers and Reports
of the Visiting Committees. This subseries is in no way inclusive, however, it is quite useful as
both a means of identifying the titles and subjects of numerous Overseers' committees and
providing a single point of access to a number of a committee's reports. Arranged alphabetically,
and thereunder chronologically.
Related Material: To locate specific committee reports and to see which Overseers'
committees met and reported during each year, researchers should identify and browse the
relevant report series described in this finding aid, refer to the Records of the Board of Overseers

Title: Examinations,

Records History
Custodial History: These examinations have been gathered together by librarians and archivists at
Harvard University for over a century. The sources of these copies of the examinations are varied.
One well-represented source has been the libraries themselves, where copies of obsolete
examinations were a library resource for students. When the examinations were outdated, they
made their way into the Archives' historical collections. Other sources for examinations have been
the departments, students, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Over the years, the archivists'
efforts have been aimed toward filling in gaps in the set of exams, rather than recording the
immediate source of each, so, for each examination, there is more than one possible source.
Markings on some copies may indicate their custodial history.
Accruals: The University Archives will continue to fill in gaps in this collection as material
becomes available, but no accruals are expected from the most frequent past source of
examinations, the undergraduate libraries.
Processing Information : Re-processed by Juliana Kuipers, April-May 2004. Processing staff in
the Harvard University Archives re-arranged an artificial collection of Harvard University
examinations. Previously exams were arranged chronologically, and thereunder by type of exam.
The collection has been collapsed into twelve series by type of examination, and individual item
call numbers have been deleted. The chronological arrangement of each series has been retained.
Any items not fitting into these series were treated as monographs and catalogued individually into
HOLLIS, Harvard's on-line library information system, and can be found under HUC 7xxx.

Description : 38 cubic feet in 111 containers.
History notes Edward Waldo Forbes (1873-1969) was director of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, an
accomplished artist, and a world traveler. He was born into a prominent family (his parents being William
Hathaway Forbes and Edith Emerson Forbes, his maternal grandfather being Ralph Waldo Emerson) in 1873
on the family-owned Naushon Island in Massachusetts. In 1907, Forbes married Margaret Laighton, a notable
watercolorist and gardener; they had five children. Forbes relationship with Harvard and the arts began when he
earned his Harvard A.B. 1895. He continued his studies at Oxford University, and returned to Massachusetts to
form the Charles River Association, an organization dedicated to preserving Harvard's landscape. He became a
trustee of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1903 and served in that capacity for 63 years. He acquired art,
particularly Italian paintings; his gifts and loans to the Fogg Art Museum contributed significantly to the museum's
eventual rise to worldwide prominence. In 1909, Forbes became Director of the Fogg Art Museum. During his 35
years there, he and his assistant director, Paul Sachs, oversaw the impressive growth of the Museum's
collections, staff, property, and reputation. Forbes also served as a lecturer in Fine Arts at Harvard from 1909
to
1935. He was named the Martin A. Ryerson Lecturer in Fine Arts. From 1945 to 1957, Forbes was a member of
the Harvard Board of Overseers.
Summary These papers document the personal and professional life of Edward Waldo Forbes (EWF) and the lives of
members of the Forbes family. They include EWF's personal and professional correspondence and papers,
diaries and calendars, writings, acccount books, school papers, lecture notes, and memorabilia. Of note are the
manuscript of EWF's history of the Fogg Art Museum, papers relating to Gerry's Landing (a riverfront site in
Cambridge), papers relating to Harvard Riverside Associates, and papers relating to EWF's World War I Red
Cross service. Included are diaries belonging to Margaret Laighton Forbes and Sarah Forbes.

1873-721
1921/22 (299 v.)] Holdings Availability
Description : 308 containers
Summary : Contains records pertaining to absences from recitations. Some of the volumes contain
information about class rank. Records for 1827/8 were known as "bill of absences," and from
1849/50 as "day-page books." After 1921/2,absences were kept on record sheets filed at end
of term in student folders. During the period when rank was kept by the "aggregates" method
(aggregates through 1875/6; aggregates and percentages from 1876/7-1885/6), the term
"aggregates" appear on the day-pages. They were then probably copied onto the rank
scales. In 1886/7, when the letter system began, only the mid-year ranks were recorded.
After 1875/6, records were kept in several volumes annually, either by class or in alphabetical
divisions.

Kristi,
Below is the information from Harvard that you requested about G.B. Dorr. Whomever recorded
the data transposed weight and height figures. My own hunch is that Dorr
at seventeen years still had a few years of growth left and that he may well
have "maxed out" at more than six feet.
I talked with Aimee Beal Church about our conversation and she--like me--
would like to receive the "night sky" GBD image you promised. Also, I
will review the Acadia Web pages within the next week and make
suggested revisions to you, including the one on "Acadie." Have you
heard anything about preparing new text for the wayside exhibit at Oldfarm?
Three months ago I sent a corrected script to Marie & Becky at their request
but have not heard back whether it is moving forward.
A pleasure to make your acquaintance. Keep me in the loop and I'll do the
same with you.
All the Best,
Ronald Epp

Hi Ron,
Attached is a scan of the anthropometric measurement card for G. Dorr, Harvard College Class of 1874, from
the records of the department of physical education at Harvard (Archives call number UAV 689.270 Box 3).
There is not a corresponding photograph for Dorr; the photographs don't begin until the Class of 1880. (I did
check to be sure!)
Please see the Permission to Publish from Collections section of our website for updated information on
submitting requests.
I hope this is useful, and that you had a successful trip north. I'm heading to Maine for vacation soon and
definitely looking forward to it!
Regards,
Barbara

Dear Barbara,
You may recall that several years ago you provided me with superb assistance in researching the Harvard career of Acadia National Park founder George Bucknam Dorr (1853-1944).
I'm pleased to tell you that I've finally completed the manuscript and the book will be published by the Library of American Landscape History, an affiliate of the University of
Massachusetts Press.
Presently
I
am gathering the images needed and I would like to include the two photographs that appear in Harvard College. Class of 1874. Fiftieth Anniversary Report. 1924. Pg. 86.
How might I secure copies: digital or print? I'd appreciate any guidance you could provide and instructions regarding permissions--and citation preferences--for citing in the
forthcoming publication the resources that you so efficiently secured for me.
All the Best,
Ron Epp

You mentioned that there might be library circulation lists to indicate what he

Finally, William James writes to his wife that he wants Mr. Dorr as one of his

Dear Barbara,
Thank you for the valuable assistance you provided me this past
Wednesday. I made some significant strides in understanding Dorr's
Harvard undergraduate years (1870-74). Later I need to look deeper
into his involvement in several of the college Clubs: Porcellian,
Institute of 1770, etc. and what records exist documenting his use of
the library.
But before you depart for Bar Harbor, could you provide me with some
direction for accessing similar information on his graduate work in the
College of Arts & Sciences
(Graduate Department) 1888-1891.
Would the Yearly Returns--Examinations and Aggregates cover this
period? If so, are they available on site? If not, what might be helpful to
determine his course work, faculty, and class standing?
The Harvard Annual Catalogs for 1871-74 were very helpful and I'll
need to refer to them again but I wondered there were separate
catalogs for the graduate school during the 1888-91 timeframe or
whether this information was still included in the general catalog. Can
you determine this?
Finally, you mentioned UA V. 161. 201.10, the Admissions folders, as
a way of locating information on Dorr that you might be able to have
copied and sent to me. I won't likely return until August 22nd and could
pursue this at this time (with you?) if that is better for you. Would not
Dorr have gone through a similar admission process for Graduate
School?
Thank you once again for this special attention.

I would appreciate a response from you regarding two matters:
It is extremely important to me to locate as much evidence of George B. Dorr's
graduate work in the College of Arts and Sciences from 1888-1891, especially
data regarding his admission (UAV 161.200 hd) and the courses he took and
completed--and the faculty for each--without earning his degree. Regarding the
latter I cannot locate the appropriate HOLLIS headings to search for the
required call number. Can you assist? Will this be on site and if not can you
request it from the depository?
Barbara kindly gave me an article by Harley P. Holden on "Student Records:
The Harvard Experience" (American Archivist 39, #1, Oct. 1976) which contains
the following quote: "We have avaialble for different periods such records as
absences from recitation, admission, books, class rank lists, concentration
cards, course lists, disciplinary material, final returns, general exams, grade
sheets, language requirement results, parentage cards, prayer cut
records rank scales, record cards, summons books, and withdrawals." I have
been unable to locate any of the underscored items in HOLLIS and would
appreciate your assistance with this as well as locating the call numbers for the
library charhging records for 1870-1874 and 1888-1891.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cordially,
Ronald H. Epp, Ph.D.
