Dear Debbie,
Following up on our phone conversation last week, I've carefully reviewed the list of donors of Hancock County Trustee of
Public Reservations land from 1901-1949 and cumulatively women contributed nearly one-third of all parcels (excluding
donations from corporate entities). Frankly, I was surprised! To be sure, some were donating land purchased by a spouse
or male relative yet the impressive involvement of women in the shaping of what would become Acadía National
Park appears to be an untold story.
I've extracted a list of names from the 1939 HCTPR History and I wonder whether you might have documentation on any
of them that might help shape an exhibit. Some resided in other MDI communities.

Hi Ron:
DorrBio2008 (33)
You might want a bit of extra time at Woodlawn. I have discovered and gone through John Peters records and found a file titled "park roads." There is

other information and perhaps you might want to go see the rest of the material (which is not at Woodlawn) to see what else there might be. It is an

Dear Josh,
I'm headed your way on September 8th and hope to see you sometime that week, perhaps not until the 12th when I head south. Will you be about?
Can you check on a factual matter for me brfore then? I'm trying to determine the date range for George Stebbinms Presidency of the HCTPR. I think it
becan with the death of Judge Deasy in 1940 and continued for at least five years or more.
Much to tell about the Dom bio--later

Dear Josh & Roz,
I trust you have weathered this most severe winter in
somewhat good spirits. Following my departure last
December my clutch showed signs of failure as I headed
south on I-95 forcing me to drive most hesitantly at 50
miles an hour until I reached Merrimack over seven
hours later. With prohibitive costs for its repair, I
purchased a new Subaru just as my back began to
spasm with terrible pains that after steroids and two
weeks on my back was diagnosed as an arthritic
narrowing in my C5-C7 vertebrae. Physical therapy for
six weeks has been very helpful. Enough about my
woes.
I write to ask whether you recall in the HCTPR archives a
letter dated September 2, 1930 from Mr. Rockefeller to
Mr. Hale. I have a copy from the Rockefeller Archive
Center but bring this to your attention because it speaks
to the visit by Rockefeller and his wife to the House, his
offer to donate $5,000 to its restoration, and then goes
on to suggest a property swap in some detail. I'm under
RAC copyright restrictions and cannot send this letter off
to you should you be interested, but I'm confident that
RAC archivist Michele Hiltzik would positively consider
your request for a copy (Source: RG III.2.I. B. 79. f. 795)
should you want to pursue this
(hiltzim@mail.rockefeller.edu or 914-366-6342) One
could build from this an interesting article for the
Woodlawn newsletter.
I also want to bring to your attention that I've uncovered
several sets of HCTPR Minutes that are not in your
archive. Whether copyright restrictions apply here I've
yet to investigate, but if you are interested in adding
them to your holdings let me know. I plan on visiting MDI
April 14-16 and may be able to stop by when exiting the
island.
Work on the Dorr biography progresses. I'm now
approaching the final decade of his life and have written
a publisher prospectus which I'll send off to an interested
party this weekend.

RE: Ron Epp's newsletter essay
Josh,
Received your mailing on Thursday and will work on the content and apply it accordingly to
my newsletter piece which I'll send off first of the week.
I was touched by your frustration in learning more about Ernest T. Paine. I used some of
our proprietary databases and came up with the following. I checked the online "Boston
Globe" and "New York Times" (NYT coverage from 1851-2002) and found nothing on him. A
search of JSTOR which is a retrospective database of content of hundreds of long standing
and celebrated journals from their inception, revealed that a Ernest Trowbridge Paine
wrote a dissertation on "Emile Durkheim's Social Theory of Religion" in 1919 (which
appears to fit the timeframe) and then went on to teach as an Instructor in Philosophy at
the Sage School of Philosophy at Cornell University where I have him listed in the
Proceedings of the American Philosophical Association, December 30, 1934. It is most odd
that he did not advance professionally to an assistant or associate professor level in all
those years but that might be explained by the absence of a bibliographic record.I
couldn't fin any additional information at the Sage School website or within the Cornell
U. libraries online catalog.
IF this is your Ernest Paine, it would be useful to have some corroborative data about his
later life, place of residence, family relationships, etc., but this is about as far as I
can go with the information I have at hand. Also, I tried to "Google" him and was only led
to the Woodlawn website.
Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Thank you SO much for writing the article- I am very anxious to read it!
I have done some research in the Hale series and found some interesting
things. I think you had reviewed these files as it appears that we copied
some things for you. Never the less, I took the liberty to copy a bunch of
correspondence for you from those files. It is in today mail.

Josh,
I wanted to let you and Roz know prior to the 20th deadline that I'm still slimming down
the draft. Word count is now at 1,200 but I'm hopeful that I can shave off another two
hundred words. But beyond that I don 't think it will be the article that you'll want to
publish. But that will be your call once you see what I've sent in on Monday. I need my
most severe critic to edit it this weekend--namely my wife!
On the matter of my earlier email concerning the announcement I sent in for the Bar Harbor
Chamber web page. I felt uncomfortable putting the name of the Trustees center stage and
so sent to Alice Long a revision that removed the name of the Trustees and fopcused
attention on the Spirit of Acadia Committee and the Founders. I hope this better meets
with your approval. Frankly, I've been SO invested in the Trustees the last couple of days
that when it came time to write the Chamber promo I couldn't disengage- not to mention
that ouside my office a group of library guests were behaving as if it were New Years
eve--quite distracting.
Have a grand weekend.

Dear Joshua,
Thanks for the opportunity to put together a piece of the Dorr/Hale
connection for the summer 2005 newsletter.
Before I commit, I need to examine my files to determine whether I have a
sufficient amount of information to offer an interpretation of their
relationship. Regardless of what I discover I believe that I will need to
spend several hours in your archives determining if there are documents that
I missed on this issue during my earlier visits. Would it be possible for me
to reserve some time in your archives on the 10th of January, the day before
our next Dorr-o-phile group meeting?
Best wishes for the holiday season!!!

Hi Ron:
I am writing to see if you would write an article about Dorr and his connection to Richard
Hale (and thus Woodlawn) for our summer 2005 newsletter. it could also touch upon the
formation of the HCTPR. We would like an article about 4-5 pages, single space, in length
(gives us room to edit). We would have a June 1 deadlne for a early-July release. We
would be very appreciative of your effort, and I think this is a nice way to connect
Woodalwn to the celebrations of George B Dorr this summer. Let me know what you think.
I look forward to hearing from and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

Were you aware that the Abbe Museum has a collection of glass lantern slides
and that about 30 of them are of images and documents relative to the Black
House that may - or may not--duplicate resources in your archive? Contact
Julia if you wish to follow through on this.
I can't recall if I earlier emailed you about progress on photocopying the
documents that I identified during my January 10th visit.

RE: HCTPR & Mr. Dorr
Hi Ron:
It was great hearing from you and I am excited to hear about your research.
Roz has my thesis a bit wrong. Actually, I am cataloguing and arranging the
records of the HCTPR that we have hear at Woodlawn. These records primarily
involve the HCTPR's governance of Woodlawn and the bulk of the material
originates from Richard W. Hale and Ernst T. Paine, both of whom were at
different times chair of the Black House Committee. The rest is the files
of all the presidents at Woodlawn and few other key figures. In addition to
developing the finding aid/cataloguing these records, I am writing a very
brief administrative history of Woodlawn as a historic house museum. It is
a good project, but admittedly a project to get my thesis finished. These
records have not been microfilmed (although the papers the Black Family have
because
Japan
been). I will make sure to send you the completed finding aid, and would be
interested in the Dorr papers finding aid.
I have contacted Hale and Dorr and spoke to John D. Hamilton, Jr.
(Chairman) . He sent me a chapter from a book on Hall and Dorr that is about
Richard Hale. I would be happy to copy it and send it along to you. Hale's
Dorr And
father was principle in the firm Hale and Fiske.
Judge Peters was executor of George Nixon Black, Jr.'s will and his nephew.
We have a good amount of his correspondence here. Little, if any deal
directly with ANP, but some of it deals with HCTPR. I believe it was his
involvement with the HCTPR that led GNB to give the property to the HCTPR.
According to Herb Silsby, if any of his papers survive they would be at
Bowdoin College. Herb also has a file on Peters, but he says there is not
much to it.
I would be delighted to see you in mid-September and share notes. By then
my finding aid will be complete and you may want to plan on doing some
research. Probably not much you have seen here already, but it is much more
accessible now.
I look forward to seeing and hearing from,
Joshua

Joshua,
I've been reviewing the portion of the HCTPR Finding Aid that you provided me several
weeeks ago when Elizabeth and I visited.
A couple of matters need to be brought to your attention:
1. On page 8 ("Scope of the Collection") final sentence, you should mention that
additional records can be found at the Rockefeller Archive Center.
2. On page 12 (Sub-Series C: Buildings/Grounds) you may wish to draw attention to the
newly formed Beatrix Farrand Society collections which are housed at Garland Farms on MDI
and administered by Patrick Chasse, the President of the BFS. If the two of you have not
yet met, I would suggest that you give him a call because he may have documents relative
to Ms. Farrand's role in landscaping Woodlawn; Chasse (207-288-5671) gave us the grand
tour of Garland Farms following our visit with you.
3. On your list of Names and Companies (pp. 17 ff.) the name of Serenus Rodick (from page
19) is omitted.
Otherwise, a remarkable piece of organization. Bravo!
I would like to look at several files that may contacin documents that escaped my
attention before you developed this finding aid (by the way, my Dorr finding aid is
attached if I haven't yet sent it). I'd caution you that I was not permitted by the Deb
Dyer at the Bar Harbor Historical Society to arrange the Dorr Papers following standard
archival practice--hence their disorderliness
You may get a call from a Someville gentleman by the name of Henry Raup who was at my Port
in the Storm booktalk on Mr. Dorr on September 16th and has considerable interest in the
naming of the MDI mountains ( Series I, B2, Sub-Series C, f. 1) since I recently phoned him
to suggest that you might have documents of interest to him.
Finally, I was approached by Alice Long, a Bar Harbor resident who is a member of the
Acadia National Park Advistory Commision, who is interested in putting together a
committee to work on a park sponsored event to celebrate in 2005 the life of Mr. Dorr. I
will work with her on this yet ill-defined project. Your appreciation for Mr. Dorr and his
role in the HCTPR would be most helpful if you could spare some time for participating in
an initial meeting in a month or SO to brainstorm possible venues for increasing public
awareness of Mr. Dorr's contributions to Hancock County and the National Park Service's
conservation efforts. Interested?
With best wishes,
Ron

Dear Joshua,
I talked with Rosamond at the MDIHS last week when I was on MDI and learned that you are engaged in
graduate work and developing a thesis on the history of the HCTPR. Have I got it right?
My own research has progressed since we last met and I am almost done (after four years) with the work
necessary for Mr. Dorr's biography. Right now I'm tracking down family ancestry and scattered details
regarding his life prior to the establishment of the Trustees. I've uncovered some documentation regarding the
Trustees that I did not see in your archival files. And by the way, I have read that your archives have been
microfilmed. If this is accurate, are copies available? Is there a archival finding aid? I've just completed a 15
page finding aid to the Dorr Papers--now available at Jesup Library, Park HQ, and the BHHS--
which I can send you as an attachment ifg you are interested.
One loose end concerns the Hale family. You once suggested that I contact Hale and Dorr in Boston. Have you
done so? I need to do so in order to flesh out Mr. Dorr's father's professional life. If you hjave a contact person
that would be very helpful.
I hope your 75th anniversary celebrations are going well. My wife and I will be vacationing on MDI in mid-
September and I hope we can stop by and say hello--and walk the property trails as well.
With warm regards,
Ron Epp
P.S. I've been trying unsuccessfully to locate any surviuving papers for Ellsworth's Judge John A. Peters who
was so instrumental in the park formation. No success and even my recent letter of inquiry to Herbert Silsby
has gone unanswered.
Any suggestions?

HCTPR Archives & Mr. Dorr
Dear Josh and Rosamond,
I will be journeying to Ellsworth shortly (November 13 & 14) and wondered whether I could see either of you to
discuss the images that are part of the HCTPR/Woodlawn archives. My work on Mr. Dorr has greatly
intensified in recent months and I would like to be confident that I have not missed any document or images
residing at Woodlawn.
I ran across at least one image in the HCTPR Centennial publication in the Ellsworth American that was
credited to your facility and it peaked my interest regarding what else you might have relative to the first
1901-1945 era.
I'd also briefly like to reexamine some of the early archival material relative to some "secondary" figures (e.g.,
L.B. Deasy, George L. Stebbin, etc.) that I may have overlooked on the first inspection.
Would it be possible to meet with one of you on either of these days in the a.m.?

Joshua,
Thank you for the time and attention given to me this past week by you
and your staff.
You asked me to remind you to have the early histry of the HCTPR
photocopied and sent to my home address :
137 Salem Drive
Cromwell, CT 06416
Will you also include HCTPR membership information. I would like to
join and advance the goals of Mr. Eliot and Mr. Dorr. When I return my
membership fee Ill add on an appropriate amount for photocopying and
mailing the aforementioned history.
With your permission, I would like to return later in the year and get
a bit deeper into the archival materials that your researcher (Mrs.
Grazy??) was kind enough to walk me through.
Finally, will there be any special celebration of the 100th
anniversary of the HCTPR in August?
With best wishes,
Ronald Epp

Dear Mr. Torrance,
Thank you for responding at length to my inqury regarding the
Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations.
I will follow your lead and again contact Bob Pyle at the Northeast
Harbor Public Library relative to his Charles Eliot holdings. Several
weeks go when I was doing research at the ANP Archives, the
curator alluded to the possibility of a NPS/HCTPR exhibit and I
would appreciate being kept abreast of that project.
It may interest you to know how difficult it has been to locate you
and to find any historic or current information on the HCTPR. Even
my contacts at the Maine State Library could not determine
whether your organization existed! Efforts to track down
publications about HCTPR at both the Library of Congress and in
the authoritative database--of 40 million items--used by the
librarian/archival community were fruitless.
Your notation that a HCTPR history exists, sent my heart soaring--
but again, there is no bibliographic record. I would gladly pay to
have a copy reproduced and mailed to me, if that is permissable.
As an alternative, I am planning a trip to Ellsworth and MDI in late
February or March, could we arrange to meet and discuss matters
of mutual interest?

Dr. Epp,
My name is Joshua Torrance and I am the Executive Director here at the
Woodlawn Museum, which is owned by the Hancock County Trustees of Public
Reservations.
We do not have a lot material documenting our formation. We do have a
history of the HCTPR (1901-1938) published in Bar Harbor in 1939. We might
have other material but I am not sure (I just came on board here as the E.D.
in September). I will do some investigating and get in touch with you. The
Northeast Harbor Library has material on Elliot. Try contacting Bob Pyle,
librarian, at 207-276-3333 for the details.
We might be doing an exhibit on HCPR with the National Park Service. I
would be more than happy to share any research with you and would appreciate
anything you uncover. We defiantly like to support and encourage research
such as yours as much as we can.
I
look forward to hearing more about your research and will be back in touch
soon.
Cordially,
Josh Torrance
