RE: Abbe museum presentation
Dear. Lydia,
Thank you for taking an interest in the recent work I did for the Abbe Museum.
I'd be very interested in hearing more about the "pictoral history of Bar Harbor" that you
are putting together with Earle Shettleworth.
Over the last six months I've devoted quite a bit of attention to old Farm, its evolution
and final disposition. There is a very interesting human story here that needs to be
communicated, as I plan to do in the Dorr biography that I am preparing. I';ve manipulated
the im, ,ages that I originally used in the PP presentation so I am not certain which image
you are seeking. However, my suggestion would be to speak with Brooke Childrey at the
Sawtelle Archive since she has an Old Farm file in her office that has many external and
internal photos that I have seen nowhere else. She has three external images: 1. North
elevation taken from the N.E.; 2. Southeast vantage point; and 3. front entrance from the
porch. I've got copies but I am sure you want to use the originals for publication
purposes. I believe that Park HQ is the source of the image in question. Currently I
tracking down the details of two architectural plans for Old Farm: one by A. Oakley used
by Tom St. Germains in the 9th edition of his walking book, and the Henry Richards design
that the Dorr's utilized.
Finally, are you aware that Brooke has digitized several hundred Henry Gleason photographs
taken in the 1920's of the park and its immediate environment? There is an inventory and
she has burnt many of these images onto a CD for my research purposes. Some of these
images were used by Mr. Dorr when he developed the 21 Sieur de Monts Publications (1916-
21) that promoted in text and image the Monument that then became Lafayette National Park.
I've been able to find all but five of these extremely rare titles. I suspect you know of
these and have considered them as a resource.
I'll be leaving for Bar Harbor Wednesday afternoon for a couple of days of research.
Should you need to reach me I'll be staying at The Colony in Hulls Cove.

Dear Dr. Epp,
Becky Colewell, of the Abbe Museum, gave me your paper on "Establishing Dr.
Abbe's Museum in Mr. Dorr's Park," and showed me your powerpoint presentation.
An excellent combination of materials. I had no idea that the two men worked
so closely together and that Abbe produced the map.
1
I am working with Earle Shettleworth on a pictorial history of Bar Harbor
and are gathering information and photographs on Abbe, Dorr and the park. When
I reviewed your powerpoint presentation, I immediately recognized the
photograph of Old Farm, but did not recognize the preceding cottage, I believe it was
slide 9. Would you share with us its identification and also where you found
such a nice photograph of Old Farm? That photo shows much more of Dorr's
cottage than those in the Bar Harbor Historical Society or Maine Historic
Preservation Commission collections.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Lydia Vandenbergh

RE: Abbe museum presentation
Dear Lydia,
Thanks for responding so quickly. I'm sorry that our paths did not intersect on MDI. I had
dinner with Anne and Lance Funderburk and we talked briefly about you--I was unaware of
the family connections.
I also met with the new director of the MDIHS and discussed with Charlotte possible
contributions to the Journal. I've already examined their archives.
Regarding your inquiry about the Sieur de Monts Publications, the numbers that I have not
been able to locate are as follows:
X: Acadia: the Closing Scene
XI: The de Monts Ancestry in France
XII: The District of Maine and the Character of the People of Boston at the end of the
18th Century XVI : The Blueberry and other Characteristic Plants of the Acadian Region
XX: Early Cod and Haddock Fishery in Acadian Waters
XXI: The Birds of Old Farm
Those that I have amassed have resulted from thorough searching of the Online Computer
Library Consortium database of 50 million bibliographic records that lists every known
depository for this series of publications; I've also contacted many research centers and
historical societies for the remainder. Perhaps these missing items are forever lost,
stored away in an attic, or uncatalogued. It is also possible that they were never
published. I have several of these in typescript but not as a published product. Will
appreciate any help or suggestions.
I will contact Earle. I missed him by one day at the Bar Harbor Historical Society
according to Deb Dyer.

Dear Ron,

A quick reply since I am short on time and aware that you are leaving this
afternoon for the island. When I am on the island next week, I will check with
Brook on the Old Farm images. As for the architectural aspect of this
cottage, you should talk with Earle Shettleworth, my co-author on the pictorial
history. He is an architectural historian and know the island cottages well. He
can be reached at 207-287-2132. I will forward your note on to him. I will be
back in touch later. By the way, if you let me know which 5 Monument
pamphlets you are seeking, I will check my files. Have you tried the MDI Historical
Society?
With Best Regards,
Lydia Vandenbergh

RE: Abbe museum presentation
Dear Lydia,
I met with Earle last week and learned of the progress of your next MDI publication
following your success with involving Down East Publications rather than Arcadia.
Earle was quite helpful with my desire to document the Bar Harbor roles of architects
Henry Richards and Guy Lowell. I'm nearly done with the four year research phase for my
biography of Mr. Dorr. And to that end, I wondered whether you had chanced upon any of the
Sieur de Monts Publications that I identified in my June 15th email message to you.
I also pointed out to Earle the rich late-19th and early 20th-century images of Herbert
Weddell Gleason, a name with which he was unfamiliar. I sent him the URL for the Concord
Free Public Library (Mass.) special collection of more than 6,000 Gleason images, many of
Maine and still more of the national parks. The Sawtelle Archives at ANP has more than a
thousand Gleason images (some lantern slides) but many are too fragile and decomposed to
use. However, several hundred are now inventoried and digitized--should you be interested,
contact curator Brooke Childrey (Brooke_childrey@nps.gov).

RE: Abbe museum presentation
Dear Lydia,
Any success in locating additional information on the Sieur de Monts Publications that
George Dorr published under the the auspices of the Wild Gardens of Acadia and the NPS?
In recent weeks I've been working with Acadia National Park Advisory Board member Alice
Long in putting together a 2005 celebration of George Dorr, occassioned by the 125th
anniversary of the completion of Old Farm. A group of about two dozen MDI residents are
sufficiently interested to meet at park HQ on November 16th to discuss alternative ways to
celebrate Mr. Dorr's contribution to us all. I thought that this might interest you and
might dovetail with your next Downeast publication that Earle discussed with me when I
visited with him several months ago.
With best regards,
Ron

Re: Abbe museum presentation
Dear Ron,
I finally have an answer for you and I am sorry to say that all the Acadia
publications I have are from the 30s. I had thought there were some older ones,
but I searched the files and boxes and came up without any under the Sieur de
Mont title. I am sorry. I do have the paper "The Hancock County Trustees of
Public Reservations: a Brief Record of their origins and Activities" by
Samuel Eliot, 1937. I imagine you already have a copy of this little text. It was
published as a small pamphlet in 1939. Please do keep Earle and me posted as
your project develops. Sincerely, Lydia

Subject: Abbe's Brook-end Cottage
Dear Lydia,
Delighteful to have met you in person earlier this week.
I've done some preliminary checking on those two images. I've put in the mail an article from the Bar Harbor record (1904)
on renovations to Brook-end as well as another article on "Brookend" which details the history of this property and
includes an architectural rendering and BHHS photograph that do not correspond to the image you handed me.
Nonetheless, I have that same image in my Abbe Museum files but it sadly contains no attribution or any other identifying
marks. I'm contacting the Abbe Museum collections curator (Julia Clarke) to see if they have any images.
The other image of the seven gentlemen at Jordan Pond before the Bubbles is a hard nut to crack. To be sure, Mr. Dorr is
at the far right. But though I have my suspicions I can't identify the others but will try to see if I can locate a matching
image with the persons named.

Dear Ron,
Good to meet you last week and thank you for checking into that cottage's identification. Although the renovation details
don't seem to match the cottage, I do have one piece of good news for you. I checked one of the cottage maps and it
shows the cottage sitting right on the shore. I will be sending the photo with Dorr at the Bubbles to several people for ID
as well. Hopefully we'll have the men IDed before September.
Best Regards,
Lydia
