HONORARY CURATOR'S PERSPECTIVE ON
FIFTY YEARS OF THE ROBERT ABBE MUSEUM
Wendell S. Hadlock
On the 11th day of October, 1926, at ten o'clock in the forenoon, the following
applicants assembled in the offices of Lynam & Rodick, Bar Harbor, Maine,
desiring to be incorporated for charitable, educational, social and benevolent
purposes, "to wit:- To acquire by gift, purchase, lease or otherwise, real estate and
other property in Hancock County, State of Maine;
for the public benefit and
hold for the purposes of making a permanent exhibit, of scientific and educational
value antiquities discovered in this region relating to the stone age period.

Thus the Lafayette National Park Museum of Stone Age Antiquities came into
being.
The Museum had its inception when its founder, Robert Abbe, in the sum-
mer of 1922, happened to see a dozen stone implements in a shop window in
Bar Harbor, and, stopping to look at them, caught the vision of prehistoric man
living on this Island in the Stone Age. He was at once fired with enthusiasm to
possess and study them, with the result that the purchase of these few imple-
ments formed the nucleus for this collection.
It became known to Dr. Abbe that two Bar Harbor residents, Mr. Charles
H. Wood and Mr. Fletcher T. Wood; and Mr. Dwight Blaney of Boston and
Iron Bound Island, had valuable specimens of the same nature, which they had
found on and about Mount Desert Island as a result of their own digging dur-
ing a period of thirty years. These men offered their collections to Dr. Abbe,
provided he constructed a suitable fireproof building which would insure their
safety for all time. This he promised to do.
In 1927 after long consideration, a fine site was chosen near the Sieur de
Monts Spring and a building begun which was completed the following year.
This is a great addition to the Park as well as a source of instruction and pleas-
ure to thousands of visitors whose numbers are rapidly increasing each year.
The erection of the Museum was made possible by the liberal gifts of
interested friends; and it was dedicated August 14, 1928, with impressive cere-
monies as a Memorial to Robert Abbe. 2

MEMORANDUM for the Regional Director, Region One.
Sanded
I regret to inform you of the death on Monday, May 17, of Mr.
Serenus B. Rodick, formerly a member of our organization as an attorney.
Mr. Rodick's passing was sudden, the result of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. Rodick was most helpful before, during and after his official
connection with the park, having an extensive knowledge of the land
title history of this region which was invaluable in studying the titles
to the many parcels of land which comprise the park. No other person
in town possesses even in small measure similar knowledge.
The park has lost a staunch friend and valued advisor.
/s/ B. L. Hadley,
B. L. Hadley,
Superintendent.
